Tramping<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Dashing o’er the snow
\nJumping fence and drift
\nO’er the fields we go
\nUpon our snow shoes swift
\nBlue tuque [hat] on our head
\nSnow shoes strapped on tight
\nOh what fun it is to tramp
\nOut on a moonlight night.<\/p>\n

Tramping boys, Tramping boys
\nO’er many a mile we go,
\nOh what fun it is to tramp
\nAcross the trackless snow<\/p>\n

Mishaps at times we meet
\nAs o’er the snow we dash
\nSometimes a strap we break
\nOr perhaps a shoe we smash
\nSometimes we get a spill
\nAnd away we sprawling lie
\nWhile up there goes a merry shout
\nFrom the fellows tramping bye.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Among Maine’s Franco-American communities, snowshoeing or tramping was a popular winter recreational sport for men and women. Snowshoe clubs, such as the Rochambeau and Voltigeur Clubs, arose in Biddeford and Saco and continue to this day. Club members wore distinctive uniforms including blanket coats, toques and sashes in club colors. Club activities included social events, such as tramps or hikes through scenic areas followed by a dinner and dancing, snowshoe races and even snow hurdles.<\/p>\n
