Post doc appointments at the University of Maine are for a limited duration and must include an educational component. <em>University policy requires that a University of Maine faculty member be identified as a mentor and that specific guidelines be met.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the post doc appointment is to further prepare an individual who was recently awarded a doctorate to undertake the responsibilities of a career in research. The following guidelines are intended to ensure that post docs have meaningful guidance and support during this phase of career preparation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Research Associate<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plan and conduct assigned and\/or original research projects autonomously while working collaboratively with UM faculty, staff, post docs, and students.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain accurate records of research findings and the analysis of results.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare manuscripts for publication in collaboration with University of Maine faculty, staff, post docs, and students.<\/li>\n<li>Present research findings at professional meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Mentor graduate and undergraduate students as appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Responsibilities of the Faculty Mentor<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Define and direct research projects in areas that will broaden the experience and expertise of the postdoctoral research associate in preparation for a career in research.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor progress of the postdoctoral research associate through regular (at least weekly) one-on-one meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage and aid the postdoctoral research associate in publishing and presenting research results to the international community of experts in the field<\/li>\n<li>Instruct the postdoctoral research associate in funding and proposal writing strategies.<\/li>\n<li>Write recommendation letters and aid in job searches during the final stages of the postdoctoral research appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct performance evaluations as specified in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.edu\/human-resources\/labor-relations\/\">UMPSA Agreement<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recruitment and Hiring Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete a job description and send it to your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/hr\/resource\/hrp-department-assignments\/\">HRP<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Postdocs should be hired through a search unless a search waiver is granted. A search waiver may be requested if the person is specifically named in the grant funding the position. Please reach out to your Human Resources Partner for process guidance.<\/li>\n<li>A requisition will need to be submitted and fully approved before a search can begin or to obtain approval for a search waiver. Requisitions and searches are conducted through the university&#8217;s Applicant Tracking System.<\/li>\n<li>The University of Maine is an Equal Opportunity\/Affirmative Action employer, and as such searches should be conducted to allow an equal opportunity for applicants to apply for a particular position.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>overall maximum duration\u00a0<\/strong>of an appointment as a postdoc hired out of an approved search or search waiver is\u00a0<strong>five years<\/strong>.
