The UMaine-UNB History Graduate Student Conference is held annually during the Fall semester. Jointly hosted by graduate students at both universities since 1998, the conference site alternates every other year between the two campuses in Orono, Maine, and Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. The conference offers a wonderful opportunity for History graduate students from the University of Maine, the University of New Brunswick, as well as universities across the U.S. and Canada, to present their work in a relaxed and amiable setting among friends, fellow graduate students and faculty from the host institution. The conference allows graduate students to gain experience presenting a paper at a conference, and hear feedback about their research. In past years, the UMaine-UNB Conference has hosted participants from many universities in North America including Miami University, the University of Vermont, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Memphis, the University of Saskatchewan, McGill University, Universite de Moncton, Universite Laval, and the University of Alberta, among others.<\/p>\n

Call for Papers<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n 16th<\/sup> Annual University of Maine\/University of New Brunswick International<\/p>\n Graduate Student Conference<\/p>\n October 3-5, 2014<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Writing History in an Age of Shifting Centers: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Changing Paradigms, Challenges, and Perspectives\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The History Graduate Student Association (HGSA) of the University of Maine wishes to announce the 16th<\/sup> Annual International Graduate Student History Conference<\/em>,to be held October 3-5, 2014 in Orono, ME.\u00a0 Sponsored jointly by the graduate students of the University of Maine and the University of New Brunswick, the conference alternates between the two campuses and has attracted participants from universities throughout the United States and Canada.\u00a0 This year\u2019s conference will be held on the University of Maine campus.\u00a0 Dr. Elizabeth Mancke will deliver the keynote address on October 3.\u00a0 Dr. Mancke is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Studies at the University of New Brunswick.\u00a0 Panels on a variety of historical topics will take place on October 4-5.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Interested graduate students are invited to submit proposals on any historical period or theme.\u00a0 Of particular interest are papers which deal with the theme Writing History in an Age of Shifting Centers: Changing Paradigms, Challenges, and Perspectives<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 For centuries, writing about the past was done through the frame of metanarratives which favored established centers of political, economic, and cultural power.\u00a0 In the second half of the twentieth century, however, this practice was challenged in many ways as scholars began reinterpreting the practice of history.\u00a0 At the same time, the human experience became increasingly understood to be fractionalized, disjointed, and at times, contradictory.\u00a0 In response, scholars have increasingly noted that phenomena once considered constant have in fact been shifting and changing all along: centers of power constantly negotiate with margins; individuals deal with overlapping and often contested identities; the environment is constantly in flux.\u00a0 These changes appear to be accelerating into the twenty-first century, and challenging scholars to alter our understanding of the past and change the methodologies with which we interpret and convey our research.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Proposals on any topic dealing with the past (regardless of discipline) are welcome, especially those exploring any dimension of this year\u2019s theme.\u00a0 Panel proposals are also welcome.\u00a0 Please submit a title, brief abstract, and CV or brief biographical sketch to:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n UM.UNB.2014@gmail.com<\/strong><\/p>\n -or-<\/p>\n UMaine\/UNB Grad Student Conference<\/p>\n 5774 Stevens Hall<\/p>\n University of Maine<\/p>\n Orono, Maine, United States 04469<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Submission Deadline: August 22, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The UMaine-UNB History Graduate Student Conference is held annually during the Fall semester.
