{"id":996,"date":"2023-09-13T10:47:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T14:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/healthcareers\/?page_id=996"},"modified":"2025-05-05T16:35:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T20:35:07","slug":"health-professions-checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/healthcareers\/health-professions-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Professions Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checklist for those applying to attend medical, veterinary, or dental school in the 2025-2026 cycle:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inform the Health Professions Office of your intention to apply to professional school no later than Friday, February 3, 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Register for <a href=\"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/career\">CareerLink<\/a>, a program offered by the Career Center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those planning to apply should have a study plan in place for the required exam(s), (e.g., MCAT, DAT, GRE).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete Scholarship Application (deadline on application form). Notice will be sent via the Health Professions Google Classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit the website of your central application service, note the opening date of application period. You should download an application so that you know what materials you should be gathering in order to complete your application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Request letters of recommendation before Spring Break. You should send your letter writers the following information:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mycampus.maine.edu\/c\/document_library\/get_file?uuid=9ba2a604-0401-419b-8e19-14775406e6c3&amp;groupId=504867\">Letter of Recommendation Release Form<\/a>, available on the Student Records website under &#8220;Forms&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A summary autobiographical statement discussing your goals, explaining why you aspire to a career in medicine, and an overview academic and work history. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information on competencies valued by your future profession (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/real-stories-demonstrating-premed-competencies\/premed-competencies-entering-medical-students\">AAMC 17 pre-med competencies for entering medical students<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Health Professions Office assists processing of medical school letters only<\/span> and should receive your letters at um.healthprofessions@maine.edu by May 16, 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide if you want a composite letter or letter packet (medical school applicants only).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify and meet with composite letter writer by May 1, 2025 (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">medical school applicants only<\/span>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Register to take your required exams in or by spring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify the schools to which you want to apply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete your Health Professionals File by May 16, 2025 (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">medical school applicants only<\/span>). A completed file contains:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All letters of recommendation, excluding the composite letter. Keep in mind the specific requirements for the schools to which you are applying. There are often requirements for the number of science faculty and\/or current practitioners, and limitations to the number of letters allowable for submission. The letters should be sent to <a href=\"mailto:healthprofessions@maine.edu\">healthprofessions@maine.edu<\/a> by May 16, 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An autobiographical statement. This should be shared with your composite letter writer and is an opportunity to discuss your goals, tell why you aspire to a career in medicine, and an overview academic and work history. This is a place to share any outstanding issues that may impact your application.
