{"id":130,"date":"2016-04-02T23:01:48","date_gmt":"2016-04-03T03:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/gsg\/?p=130"},"modified":"2019-08-05T11:48:55","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T15:48:55","slug":"entry-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/gsg\/entry-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Entry Information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Welcome to the 2016 GSG Grad Expo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Registration Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION:\u00a03rd March 2017 @ 5 pm EST<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On this page you will find everything you need to enter and participate in the University of Maine\u2019s Premier Showcase of Graduate Student Research.<\/p>\n<p>Please read this section and the attached documents carefully before proceeding to the entry form. Be aware that to be part of the GradExpo your academic advisor must be fully aware of your intent to enter and the nature of your presentation and will be notified of your entry and its nature.<\/p>\n<p>There are four areas in which you may compete: Poster Presentation, Oral Presentation, PechaKucha and Live Performances, InterMedia\/Fine Arts Exhibits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poster Presentations<\/strong> are divided into four disciplinary areas (see below), Physical Sciences &amp; Technology, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences. The student is responsible for the construction of their poster and bringing it to the Expo at the appointed time, and you must also be in attendance to present your poster when the judging is to be scheduled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oral Presentations<\/strong> are divided into four disciplinary areas (see below), Physical Sciences &amp; Technology, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences. The student will have a set time for the oral presentation of a paper, or constructed area of research, along with a PowerPoint presentation. The student is responsible for their own PowerPoint and getting it, and themselves, to their scheduled presentation on time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PechaKucha<\/strong> is an exciting new way of presenting academic (or other) information. Competitors will complete on an oral presentation timed to go with a PowerPoint presentation. The presentation is timed to 20 PowerPoint slides which change automatically every 20 seconds for a total presentation time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Bottom line \u2013 you have to be brilliantly succinct! Entrants from all disciplines will be judged by the audience in attendance. The student is responsible for their own PowerPoint and getting it, and themselves, to their scheduled presentation on time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>InterMedia, Live Performance and Fine Arts Exhibits<\/strong> In this area of competition the student may: Present a completed material work of InterMedia art, live performance (reading of original works) or fine art (paintings, sculptures, etc.); or perform a written work (poetry reading, short story, play, performance art, etc.). Student\u2019s will be responsible for getting their work, or themselves, to the exhibit for installation\/presentation. They will also be responsible being presenting their work to the judging committee. See the schedule for approximate times for presenting InterMedia, Live Performances and Fine Art Exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>In Disciplinary Presentation Sessions, oral and poster presentations are divided by academic focus. The following categories are used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical Sciences &amp; Technology<\/strong> consists of the following disciplines:\u00a0 Chemical &amp; Biological Engineering, Chemistry, Civil &amp; Environmental Engineering, Climate Change, Computer Science, Earth Science, Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Marine Sciences &amp; Oceanography, Mathematics &amp; Statistics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Soil &amp; Environmental Sciences, Spatial Information Science &amp; Engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural Sciences<\/strong> consists of the following disciplines: Animal &amp; Veterinary Sciences, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Ecology &amp; Environmental Sciences, Forest Resources, Food &amp; Nutrition Sciences, Marine Biology, Horticulture &amp; Plant Science, Wildlife Ecology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Sciences<\/strong> consists of the following disciplines: Business Administration, Communication &amp; Journalism, Communication Science &amp; Disorders, Economics, Education &amp; Human Development, Nursing, School of Policy &amp; International Affairs, Psychology, Public Administration, Social Work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Humanities<\/strong> consists of the following disciplines: English, History, InterMedia, Modern Language &amp; Classics, Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Awards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>The Graduate Student Government <\/em><\/strong>as sponsor of the GradExpo gives three awards in each of the four Presentation Divisions. The awards are the decision of the judges and are based on academic worthiness, excellence of the presentation and overall skill of the student in making their work understandable to a wide audience. The awards are $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also have additional awards for which you will need to \u201copt-in\u201d.
