The Annual Graduate Student and Faculty Recognition (Hooding) Ceremony sponsored by the Office of the President, the Graduate Student Government (GSG), and the Graduate School will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017 beginning at 4:00 pm in the Alfond Arena. Graduate students participating in the ceremony must report in regalia to the Field House by 3:15 pm to check-in and receive their reader card.
This ceremony will provide individual recognition for graduate students and their faculty advisors. We urge you to participate.
Graduate students completing your degree(s) in May 2017, August 2017, or for December 2016 graduates:

Master’s & Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) Students: Graduates must wear caps and gowns (regalia), and bring hoods to the ceremony. Caps, gowns, and hoods are available for purchase at the University Bookstore on campus. The cost of regalia for a Master’s/CAS student is $60.98. During the ceremony you will be hooded by the Dean of your College and a member of the Executive Committee of the Graduate Board.
Doctoral Students: Graduates must wear caps and gowns (regalia) to the ceremony. You will be hooded at Commencement, please do not bring your hood with you to the Recognition Ceremony. The cost to rent regalia is $205.46. Contact Betty Campbell at 207.581.1735 or email@example.com in the University Bookstore to request regalia. The University will be unable to respond to orders placed after the deadline of April 13th.
Doctoral Student Eligibility
Eligibility for doctoral students to participate in any ceremonies (Recognition and Commencement) are as follows:
- May 2017 doctoral candidates that have successfully completed all degree requirements
- August 2017 doctoral candidates who have successfully defended their dissertation by April 28th
- December 2016 graduates
- August 2016 graduates who did not participate in May 2016 ceremonies
During the Recognition Ceremony, doctoral students will be honored by President, Dr. Susan Hunter and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost, Dr. Jeffrey Hecker. Doctoral students are hooded at Commencement on Saturday, May 13th.
Reminder: August candidates participating in May Commencement must apply to graduate for August 2017 by March 15th.
Guests should arrive at the Alfond Arena by 3:30 pm for early seating. Seating charts will be posted throughout the arena for assistance. This is an open seating event and does not require tickets. Ushers will be available if your guests have any questions while in the Alfond Arena. Photos and Flowers
GradImages is the exclusive photographer for the 2017 Recognition Ceremony.
GradImages will also be available to take professional portraits at the University of Maine Bookstore Grad Fair on March 22 from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Grad Flowers is the exclusive provider of flowers for the 2017 Recognition Ceremony.
Grad Flowers is noted for its community partnerships and focus on sustainability. All unsold flowers are donated to the university’s choice of area hospitals, charities, retirement homes or other community groups. In support of sustainable growing practices, all flowers are Rainforest Alliance Certified and Veriflora Certified.
Immediately following the ceremony, a reception with light refreshments for you and your guests will be held in Wells Conference Center. Both events are free of charge.
