Stodder Hall Weekly Academic Writing Group

October 6, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Every Sunday,  starting September 15, will be the Writing Group meeting of the Stodder Academic. It will be in room 57 from 3-5pm. It is open to *all UMaine graduate students.*

The purpose of the group is to dedicate time every week to work on your various academic writing projects (thesis, dissertation, manuscript, term
paper, etc). This is a way to have some dedicated time to steadily work on your writing. We start with a brief check-in (i.e., “What’s everyone planning to accomplish in the next two hours?” Answers can be: “Write two paragraphs,” “Read an article”, “Outline my method section,” etc). Then we will use the Pomodoro method to work in 25-minute increments.

This is an open group, meaning that you do not have to attend every week, and can start coming whichever week you want.

Academic writing can be daunting, and it’s common to want to work in large chunks of time over a shorter period, but the research shows that trying to
write this way is incredibly inefficient. The writing group is one way to help by providing smaller increments of time over a longer period, and with some accountability (increased motivation to attend when you know other people are doing it too).

And, last but not least, snacks will be provided to keep appetites motivated as well! If you plan to attend, please email fayeza.ahmed@maine.edu no later than 24 hours before each week. This allows Dr. Ahmed time to estimate and purchase the right amount of snacks.

There are two sets of outside doors (from the Stodder parking lot or from the Chadbourne lot on the ground floor) that can be unlocked using your Mainecard.
