Graduate Scholarships for Returning Peace Corps Volunteers
At the University of Maine, we value your service with the Peace Corps. You are dedicated to helping communities and people worldwide. You have diverse experiences and global perspectives. You know the value of hard work and kind words. To say “Thank You,” the University of Maine and the Paul D. Coverdell Program have partnered to offer Three Renewable University of Maine Scholarships covering up to 24 credits of full-time tuition per year to returning Peace Corps volunteers – like you – who want to continue serving communities in need through earning their Master of Social Work.
About the Master of Social Work Program
The University of Maine Master of Social Work program has been educating graduate social workers since 1988. As a Top-100 US News and World Report degree and a Top-20 Most Affordable Social Work Program, we take pride in preparing ethical, competent, effective advanced generalist social workers capable of practicing with autonomy and skill in diverse social welfare, health, and human services settings. We admit small cohorts (typically around 45 per year) to give you the opportunity to form a deep connection with the curriculum, your classmates, your professors, and the community. At the University of Maine, we create a culture of inclusiveness and seek talented students from all backgrounds who bring diverse ideas and perspectives to the classroom and beyond. We know you want to begin your career right away, and so our full-time curriculum is designed to be completed in as little as five semesters, with supervised Field Placements beginning in your first semester of graduate study!
To qualify, you must:
- Be a Returning Peace Corps Volunteer in good standing.
- Apply and be fully or conditionally admitted to the Master of Social Work full-time, on-campus program.
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress in the MSW program.
Additional Benefits for Returning Peace Corps Volunteers
The scholarship is renewable and will cover year-round full-time tuition (9 credits spring and fall, 6 credits summer). Your application fees will be waived, and out-of-state students will be granted the in-state rate for any additional credit hours taken above those covered by the scholarship. Additionally, as a Coverdell Fellow, you will receive specialized assistance in selecting internship sites that help to fulfill your educational and career goals and in keeping with the values you learned as a Peace Corps volunteer.
