Environmental Horticulture student participates in Flagship Internship Program Showcase and Dinner describing work with Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

Tobias Lamberts, a junior in the Environmental Horticulture program, participated in the inaugural year of the UMaine Flagship Internship Program. This program aims to prepare graduates for meaningful careers and civic responsibilities through experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Tobias, from South Berwick, Maine was a Public Horticulture Intern for the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens during the summer of 2017. He experienced many facets of botanical garden operation, including working on the children’s garden and exploring his passion for the carnivorous pitcher plant and many orchid species. Tobias presented his work at the Flagship Internship Program Showcase and Dinner on Sept. 13, 2017.

The mission of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, which opened in Boothbay in 2007, is to inspire meaningful connections among people, plants, and nature through horticulture, education and research. Today Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens comprises 295 acres of tidal shoreland and welcomes more than 100,000 guests throughout the year.

Tobias found the Flagship Internship program’s Boot Camp to be a great experience, particularly the panel discussions with a variety of industry representatives. He expects the chance to learn about networking, leadership and collaboration will help him greatly in his future career in horticulture.
