NIFA Director tours SFA labs.

Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy,  Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), toured labs in the School of Food and Agriculture (SFA) on Oct. 27, 2016 during his visit to Orono.

Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy has served as NIFA Director since 2012. As part of USDA’s Research, Education, and Extension mission, he oversees NIFA funding for a wide range of extramural research, education, and extension projects that address the needs of farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers. This research funding has supported numerous SFA investigators.  Dr. Ramaswamy visited Dr. Balu Nayak’s laboratory, where Nayak and his graduate students described their research in food processing and engineering.  He also visited Dr. Greg Porter’s laboratory where graduate student Kristen Brown described her potato breeding research.  The tour concluded with a visit to Dr. Bryan Peterson’s laboratory and a description of Peterson’s work on native ornamental plants.
