{"id":1461,"date":"2019-01-16T08:57:34","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T13:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/eo\/?page_id=1461"},"modified":"2023-08-02T12:46:30","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T16:46:30","slug":"disability-access","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/eo\/disability-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UMS Office of Equal Opportunity ensures access for people with disabilities to the academic, employment, and cultural life of the University.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"cup-tk-title\">Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)<\/h3>\n<article class=\"cup-main_content-article\">\n<div class=\"cup-main_content--container\">\n<div class=\"cup-tk-wrapper\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ada.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)<\/a>\u00a0prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodation, communications and governmental activities. The ADA also establishes requirements for telecommunications relay services. The Act has since been amended by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/laws\/statutes\/adaaa_info.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008<\/a>\u00a0(ADAAA) that redefined disability and instituted several other provisions.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the ADA is to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Provide a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities;<\/li>\n<li>Provide clear, strong, consistent, enforceable standards addressing discrimination against individuals with disabilities;<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that the federal government plays a central role in enforcing the standards established in this Act on behalf of individuals with disabilities; and<\/li>\n<li>Invoke the sweep of congressional authority, including the power to enforce the fourteenth amendment and to regulate commerce, in order to address the major areas of discrimination faced day-to-day by people with disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Office of Equal Opportunity facilitates and monitors the provision of accommodations to employees with disabilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<h3>Section 504, Rehabilitation Act<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cNo otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States . . . shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance . . . .\u201d\u00a0 29 U.S.C. \u00a7 794(a).<\/p>\n<p>The Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs receiving federal financial assistance and in the employment practices of federal contractors.\u00a0 Each federal agency has its own set of \u00a7 504 regulations but all include reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities, program accessibility, effective communication for individuals who have hearing or vision disabilities, and accessible new construction.\u00a0Section 504 and the ADA also prohibit retaliation for raising a complaint under these acts or for advocating for a right these acts protect.<\/p>\n<h3>Questions about disability access<\/h3>\n<p>Individuals with concerns or questions about the ADA or Section 504 may contact the University of Maine\u2019s ADA and Section 504 Coordinator:<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Paradis<br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:amanda.paradis1@maine.edu\">amanda.paradis1@maine.edu<\/a><br \/>\nOffice of Equal Opportunity<br \/>\n5713 Chadbourne Hall, Room 406<br \/>\nUniversity of Maine<br \/>\nOrono Maine\u00a0 04469<\/p>\n<p>Telephone:\u00a0 207.581.1226<br \/>\nTTY:\u00a0 207.581.9484<br \/>\nFax:\u00a0 207.581.1214<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UMS Office of Equal Opportunity ensures access for people with disabilities to the academic, employment, and cultural life of the University.
