An Honors College student, her thesis is titled “Sunlight’s Effect on Academic Performance.” She graduates with a minor in Human Nutrition as well. Shiber also served as a TRIO Student Support Services tutor during her time at UMaine.

Parent(s): Michael Shiber

Why did you choose to come to UMaine?

I chose the University of Maine because of its affordable tuition, especially with the Flagship Match scholarship I received as an out-of-state student. Coming from Maryland, I’ve always loved the cold and snow, which I didn’t get to experience much in recent years. I also wanted to be far from home to gain more independence and avoid the temptation of traveling back every weekend. Maine’s stunning natural beauty offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, from hiking in Acadia National Park to exploring Mount Katahdin and Bar Harbor. The state’s old-school charm, reminiscent of a cozy grandparent’s home, makes it a wonderful place to live and study.

Have you collaborated with a mentor, professor or role model who made your time at UMaine better, and if so, who are they and how have they impacted your time at UMaine?

I have worked closely with my thesis advisor, Dr. Christopher Nightingale, and committee member, Senior Lecturer of Health Education and Lifespan Jennifer McNulty, over the past two semesters. They have made the process much less stressful for me. As someone who tends to feel overwhelmed, their support has been invaluable. They consistently offer help, set aside time to review my work, and provide thoughtful suggestions to improve my thesis. Most importantly, they check in on my well-being, understanding that some weeks are busier than others.

Jen McNulty has also played a crucial role in my internship class this semester. She was instrumental in helping me find an internship that aligns with my career interests and continues to check in weekly to ensure everything is going well. She genuinely enjoys hearing about my progress and learning experiences. This has become one of my favorite classes, and I am incredibly grateful she recommended it, as it is preparing me well for graduate school.

What has coming to UMaine enabled you to explore beyond academics?

Coming to UMaine has allowed me to explore so much beyond academics. I’ve had the chance to immerse myself in Maine’s beautiful outdoor environment, from hiking in Acadia National Park to exploring Mount Katahdin and Bar Harbor. The change in seasons has also introduced me to winter activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, which I rarely experienced growing up in Maryland. Additionally, UMaine has allowed me to build independence, form strong relationships with professors and peers, and engage in meaningful experiences like internships that are shaping my future.

Favorite UMaine memory:

One of my favorite UMaine memories has been working closely with my thesis advisor, Dr. Christopher Nightingale, and committee member, Jen McNulty. Their support has made the process much less stressful and has helped me grow academically and professionally. Another great memory has been exploring Maine’s incredible outdoors — hiking in Acadia, visiting Bar Harbor, and experiencing the beauty of all four seasons. These experiences, along with the friendships and independence I’ve gained, have made my time at UMaine truly unforgettable.

What’s on the horizon? What are your plans for after you graduate?

After graduation, I plan to attend Arcadia University in the fall to pursue my doctorate in Physical Therapy. My goal is to become a sports-specialized physical therapist, with hopes of working with a professional Major League Baseball or National Hockey League team. I’m excited to continue building my expertise in sports rehabilitation and injury prevention, combining my passion for athletics and healthcare to help athletes perform at their best.

Special thank you message:

I want to express my deepest gratitude to my professors, mentors, friends, and family who have supported me throughout my journey at UMaine. A special thank you to Dr. Christopher Nightingale and Jennifer McNulty for their unwavering guidance and encouragement during my thesis and internship experience. Your support has made all the difference. To my friends and family, thank you for always believing in me. UMaine has given me incredible memories, lifelong friendships, and the confidence to pursue my dreams.
