{"id":16658,"date":"2019-04-05T10:50:31","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T14:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/?p=16658"},"modified":"2019-04-05T10:50:31","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T14:50:31","slug":"umaine-at-aera-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/2019\/04\/05\/umaine-at-aera-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"UMaine at AERA 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several University of Maine faculty and graduate students are participating in the 2019 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting taking place April 5-9 in Toronto. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aera.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AERA<\/a> gathers scholars from around the world in a variety of different educational disciplines to share their research.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at some of the events involving researchers from UMaine.<\/p>\n<p><u>Friday April 5<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant extension professor, 4-H STEM specialist, and assistant professor of education Vanessa Klein will chair a paper session on \u201cAssemblage Thinking and the Mobilization of Education for Sustainable Development Policy Within a Canadian Province.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor of assessment and instruction Tammy Mills will be a presenting author at a roundtable session, discussing her work, \u201cPutting Posthuman Theory to Work in Collaborative Self-Study.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Saturday April 6<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant professor of curriculum, assessment and instruction Rebecca Buchanan will participate in a roundtable session, presenting her research, \u201cWriting to Learn and Writing to Teach: A Self-Study on Our Critical Reflective Practice.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Klein will present at a paper session her research, \u201cBiophilia Connections: An Examination of Connections Between Evolution Acceptance and Attitudes Toward Nature.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Sunday April 7<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Associate professor of educational leadership Ian Mette will present at a paper session his research, \u201cHow State Political Culture and History Influence Teacher Supervision and Evaluation Policy.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Buchanan will chair a paper session, \u201cMentoring, Monitoring, and Moving Through Higher Education.\u201d She also will chair a roundtable session titled, \u201cThe Stakes Are High: Critically (Re)Assessing Teacher Education Practice,\u201d and present at another paper session her research on \u201cInvestigating Teacher Identity Development Through a Professional Development on Grading Practices.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Klein will chair a paper session titled, \u201cClimate Change and Critical Science Agency: Is \u2018Knowing\u2019 Enough?\u201d She\u2019ll also chair a roundtable session, \u201cTransforming Culturally Relevant Pedagogies During Field Experiences for Preservice Teachers.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Monday April 8<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant professor of educational leadership Catharine Biddle, professor of economics Kathleen Bell, assistant professor of forest landscape management &amp; economics Mindy Crandall, along with undergraduate students Dominic Gayton, Ismael Thadal, and Owen Vanderaa will present at a roundtable session their research, \u201cPlanning for Uncertainty: The Role of Educational Leadership in Rural Community Vitality.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ming-Tso Chien, a doctoral student in literacy education, will participate in roundtable session on \u201cInternational Student Experiences and Success in Higher Education.\u201d He will present his research, \u201cOutsiders Within: The Complexity of International Teaching Assistants\u2019 Experiences.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor of higher education Leah Hakkola and Sarah Dyer, doctoral student in higher education and an academic advisor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will participate in paper session, presenting their research, \u201c\u2018Cracking the Code\u2019: How Faculty Search Chairs Challenge or Reproduce Institutional Racism.\u201d Hakkola and Dyer also will present at a roundtable session on \u201cHow Faculty Search Chairs Recruit for Diversity and Equity: A Campus Climate Perspective.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Lecturer in curriculum, assessment and instruction Evan Mooney will be a presenting author at a paper session, discussing his work, \u201cPreservice Teachers\u2019 Negotiating of Resistance to Socially Transformative Teaching.\u201d Mooney will also be a presenting author at a roundtable session, discussing his research, \u201cBreaking Barriers: Preservice Elementary Teachers\u2019 Experiences of Interdisciplinary Science and Social Studies Methods Courses.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Buchanan will chair a symposium, where she will present her research, \u201cCentralizing the Tension in Teacher Education.\u201d She also will chair a roundtable session titled, \u201cInstitutional Perspectives on Preservice Teacher Field Experiences.\u201d In another paper session, Buchanan will discuss \u201cInterrogating Preservice Teachers\u2019 Performance Through Feedback and Reflective Practice.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Klein will chair a roundtable session on \u201cMethodological Considerations in Informal Learning Environments Research.\u201d She\u2019s also presenting at a roundtable session on \u201cBreaking Barriers: Preservice Elementary Teachers\u2019 Experiences of Interdisciplinary Science and Social Studies Methods Courses.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mills will be a participant in an invited speaker session on \u201cNon-Linear Perspectives on Teacher Learning and Practice Across the Professional Continuum.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Tuesday April 9<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biddle will participate in two roundtable sessions. Her presentations are: \u201cStudent Empowered Social Emotional Learning: From Theory to Practice\u201d and \u201cSupporting Healing-Centered Engagement in Rural Schools and Communities.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Klein will chair a paper session, \u201cEnvironmental Education in a Sustainable World.\u201d In another paper session, Klein will discuss her work, \u201cAmbitious Teaching and High-Leverage Practices: Preparing Preservice Science Teachers Across Contexts.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mette will participate as the discussant in a roundtable session titled, \u201cSupervision and Instructional Leadership in the 21st Century.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several University of Maine faculty and graduate students are participating in the 2019 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting taking place April 5-9 in Toronto.
