{"id":15146,"date":"2018-02-05T11:37:12","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T16:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/?p=15146"},"modified":"2023-02-24T14:39:06","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T19:39:06","slug":"npr-interviews-allan-report-hazing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/2018\/02\/05\/npr-interviews-allan-report-hazing\/","title":{"rendered":"NPR interviews Allan for report on hazing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Elizabeth Allan, professor of higher education at the University of Maine, spoke with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/02\/02\/582670343\/penn-state-fraternity-death-brings-new-attention-to-hazing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a>\u00a0for the report, \u201cPenn State fraternity death brings new attention to hazing.\u201d Allan, who studies how prevalent hazing is and how to prevent it, defines hazing as, \u201cAny activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses or endangers them regardless of a person\u2019s willingness to participate.\u201d Allan surveyed college students and found many of them don\u2019t even know that they have experienced hazing, according to the report. \u201cWhen we asked students what they had experienced in order to become a member of their club, team or organization, 55 percent reported behaviors that would meet the definition of hazing,\u201d Allan said, adding that only about 1-in-10 of those students said they had been hazed. Allan said it\u2019s important for colleges to talk openly about hazing and its consequences, and campaigns should include more than just fraternities and sports teams.
