She earned her Ph.D. in special education from the University of Oregon, where she received a U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs Leadership Grant. Dr. Newson was awarded an Autism Intervention Research Network for Physical Health (AIR-P) Scholars grant to support her dissertation, which explored Autistic educator burnout through community-based participatory research. Before pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Newson worked as a special education teacher and educational assistant in both public and private schools across the Pacific Northwest.
