Investigation of nonfiction literature as a literary genre and its use in the classroom and children's literature and its integration into the elementary curriculum. Exploration of explicit strategic teaching practices for more effective literacy learning.

Phi Kappa Phi Literacy grant submitted with Jeanna Tuell, Old Town Schools for funds to purchase and train teachers to use technology for reading assessments, will be notified in April 2005.

Bird and Bird Grant sumitted jointly with Rosemary Bamford to develop software to study children's book illustrations--not funded, March 1996.

Stephen and Tabitha King Lending Library. I wrote a grant requesting monies to sustain and continue receiving professional resources in literacy for teachers. The Kings awarded $5,000, May 1995.

I organized and directed this summer program offering our graduate students a selection of courses in literacy learning taught by national and international faculty. An average of 250 students per summer enrolled for the courses from Maine and all over the U.S. An outgrowth of this successful program was a publication entitled Reading in Literacy Learning, Vol. 1. This publication was composed of articles written by our Literacy Festival faculty.

1988-present Elected to CELT membership (Center for the Expansion of Language and Thinking). CELT is an educational collective devoted to improvement of teaching and learning through greater understanding of the relationships between language, thinking, and learning. Through its members, it provides in-service education and consultation to school systems, colleges, professional associations and other educational groups. It also supports research and development efforts in the area of language processes, linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and their application to educational problems. This is an international organization.
