SUMMARY:Molly Feeney Wood: Effective Structures and Strategies to Teach Our Readers and Writers
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This is a two-day workshop. Day 1 (August 17) is for K-5 teachers\, instructional coaches\, interventionists and administrators. Day 2 is for grades 6-12 teachers\, instructional coaches\, interventionists and administrators. \nDownload the flyer for this event. \nThere is a strong and robust research base supporting the effectiveness of strategy instruction. When children learn to use strategies\, they are more self-regulated and actively work to use what they know to be successful and engaged\, which ultimately enhances their learning and overall performance. During this workshop\, participants will explore various how to identify which strategies will benefit individual learners the most\, and will learn structures of teaching they can use to guide student practice. The workshop will be practical so educators can immediately bring what they learn back to their classrooms. \nParticipants will explore: \n\nThe differences between skills and strategies\nHow to use Jennifer Serravallo’s reading and writing hierarchies to assess student work and match students to goals\nHow to craft strategies for reading and writing and provide students with guided practice\nWhen and why to use various methods of instruction to help students work toward their goals\n\nMolly Feeney Wood was a New York City public school teacher for several years before focusing her work exclusively on literacy. During her time in the classroom\, she was a key contributor to numerous units in widely-used curriculum\, and presented at a variety of national conferences. \nFeeney Wood works closely with Jennifer Serravallo on her team of consultants and as a freelance writer. She wrote the research whitepaper and was the primary developer of additional assessment texts for Serravallo’s book Complete Comprehension\, and has collaborated with her on three study guides. Feeney Wood currently supports school districts in their implementation of best practices within their literacy blocks\, working with teachers\, instructional coaches and administrators.

SUMMARY:Matt Glover: Nurturing Language Composition in Young Readers and Writers
DESCRIPTION:Click here to download the flier and register for this event. \nWhen young children create picture books\, they are composing language. Children use a similar process when reading picture books (before they can decode) and compose language for the illustrations they see. There are similarities in how young children compose language for the illustrations in both published books and the books they create. There are also similarities to how the compose language in dramatic play. One might think that children would display equivalent language levels across these areas\, but that isn’t always the case. Some children display more complex language in reading or writing. By recognizing this\, educators can use children’s language in one area to lift the language level in another. In this session we will practice noticing how children are using language in different areas and then using what we notice to support language growth. \nMatt Glover has been a teacher\, principal\, author and consultant for over 30 years. His latest book is “Craft and Process Studies: Units that Provide Writers with Choice of Genre.” He is also the author of “Engaging Young Writers;” co-author with Kathy Collins of “I Am Reading;” co-author with Mary Alice Berry of “Projecting Possibilities for Writers;” and co-author with Katie Wood Ray of “Already Ready” and “Watch Katie and Matt… Sit Down and Teach Up\,” a video enhanced ebook that combines video and text to examine conferring with young writers. Along with Ellin Keene\, he is the co-editor of “The Teacher You Want to Be: Essays about Children\, Learning\, and Teaching.” An internationally known literacy consultant\, he frequently speaks on topics related to nurturing writers including engagement\, choice\, conferring\, unit design and oral language composition.

SUMMARY:How STEM Undergraduates Choose\, Navigate\, and Integrate Interdisciplinarity in College and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:As the scientific community increasingly grapples with wicked problems that defy easy solutions and that cannot be addressed through singular disciplinary lenses\, higher education institutions have increasingly been called upon to develop interdisciplinary curricula at the undergraduate level— particularly in STEM fields. Ostensibly\, these programs can prepare students to address multi-faceted\, real-world problems while also giving them the skills necessary for the challenging realities of team science. However\, while ample research has examined the tensions between disciplinary cultures and interdisciplinary programs for faculty and graduate students\, relatively little is known about the experiences of undergraduate students in interdisciplinary programs. A particularly pressing knowledge gap concerns the motivations for the selection and development of an emerging identity as an interdisciplinarian within interdisciplinary programs. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Ezekiel Kimball\, associate dean for undergraduate and teacher education a the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development\, will describe findings from a recent grounded theory study that included interviews with 45 STEM students and alumnx from an interdisciplinary program at a public research institution in the Northeastern United States. These findings reveal how undergraduate students understand interdisciplinarity\, integrate it into their academic pathways\, and frame interdisciplinarity’s role in their future careers. Although focused specifically on STEM undergraduates\, implications from this study help understand tensions between students’ academic and professional identities as well as the role that projections of future selves play in understanding their undergraduate experiences. \nThe talk will take place in 207 Shibles Hall with a virtual option for those who can’t make it in person. Email coehd@maine.edu for a Zoom link.
