SUMMARY:Elementary teachers' reported reading instructional practices\, knowledge\, and needs for students with and without dyslexia
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sara Flanagan\, assistant professor of special education\, for the College of Education and Human Development’s School of Learning and Teaching Research Brown Bag series. To best understand K-5 general and special education teachers’ reading instructional and assessment practices for students with and without dyslexia\, 346 teachers completed a survey. Additionally\, 45 teachers participated in follow-up interviews to better understand their needs teaching reading. This brown bag will share a portion of the results and discuss how those may inform teacher preparation. \nThe talk will be in-person in 207 Shibles with a Zoom option: \nhttps://maine.zoom.us/j/88279235121?pwd=UlBRYnhuQUtmWG9JM2RRRTA5a0VkZz09\nPassword: 580242

SUMMARY:Learners’ Collaborative Use of Human Scale Spatial Diagrams
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Camden Bock\, Ph.D. student in STEM Education for the School of Learning and Teaching Research Brown Bag series. In school geometry\, diagrams are typically inscribed on plane surfaces (e.g.\, whiteboards\, paper\, projector screens)\, at scales smaller than the learners who inscribe them. Spatial diagrams\, rendered with virtual reality\, offer depth and human-scale to learners’ mathematical diagramming. With spatial diagrams\, learners might stand beside\, look from above\, or step inside a diagram. Further\, learners could inscribe diagrams around themselves (e.g.\, using their body as an axis of revolution). Spatial diagrams also offer an opportunity to extend research on embodied mathematics\, where networks of learners’ bodies can be part of the construction of a diagram. Bock will present on the design of a study of learners’ collaborative use of human-scale diagrams. This study seeks to extend Bock’s research on the affordance of point-of-view in spatial diagrams and understand how human-scale diagrams shape learners’ embodied discourse while they collaboratively create\, manipulate and mark-up mathematical diagrams. This work extends understandings of learners’ use of perspective in digital (Bock and Dimmel\, 2021a\, 2021b; Dimmel et al.\, 2020) and physical (Benally et al.\, 2022) spatial diagrams\, the inscription of diagrams in space (Ng and Sinclair\, 2018; Cangas et al.\, 2019)\, and the embodied relationships between learners and diagrams (Sinclair et al.\, 2013; de Freitas and Sinclair\, 2014). \nVenue: Shibles Hall\, Room 207

SUMMARY:Research on Engineering Education at K-12 Settings Across Communities of Practice: A Systematic Literature Review\, 2009-2018 (virtual event)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ethan Geheb\, Ph.D. student in STEM Education\, for the School of Learning and Teaching Research Brown Bag series. This research aims to provide a systematic review of K-12 engineering education publications between 2009 and 2018 across education research fields. Whereas previous systematic reviews focus on narrow subtopics\, this study reviews the K-12 engineering education field at large across a 10-year timespan\, investigating the evolution of research topics\, methods\, and participants. We compared empirical article publications produced by two types of journals\, engineering education journals (EEJ) and other science/math-related educational research journals (OEJ). The reasoning behind this classification comes from our theoretical stance and initial review of authorship\, which shows two distinct\, yet intersecting communities of practice (CoP) studying engineering education. A collection of 147 articles from across 21 journals were coded for topics\, target populations\, and methods\, using qualitative constant comparative analysis method and frequency analysis. Of the 147 articles\, 72 originated from EEJs such as the Journal of Engineering Education\, whereas the 75 articles were spread across 19 other educational research journals\, for instance\, Science Education. This study will interest pre-college engineering educators looking to understand what gaps exist in engineering education studies. The CoP perspective offers a unique contribution to exploring how researchers within engineering education-specific communities can improve their collaborations with other disciplines to develop an ambitious interdisciplinary agenda for K-12 engineering education. \nVirtual event.
