Adams, Bock among winners of 2021 UMaine Student Symposium awards
Tom Adams, a senior secondary education major, and Camden Bock, a STEM Education Ph.D. student, were among the students recognized for their research presentations at the 2021 UMaine Student Symposium held virtually on April 16.
Adams, advised by assistant professor of curriculum, assessment and instruction Rebecca Buchanan, received best undergraduate presentation in the education category for his project, “An Analysis of Citizenship Education Efforts in Maine Middle Schools.” Bock, who is advised by assistant professor of mathematics education and instructional technology Justin Dimmel, received best graduate presentation in the education category for “Arguing Within and Beside a Pyramid: How Can Virtual-Reality be Used to Learn Geometry?”
The sixth annual student symposium was organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, the Center for Undergraduate Research (CUGR) and Student Government and Graduate Student Government as part of Maine Impact Week. The free public event provided an opportunity for the public to view student research and scholarly work — all online due to COVID-19.
Organizers recruited 223 volunteer judges to score projects in 10 categories encompassing all fields of study at UMaine. The top students were awarded at the close of the virtual ceremony.
