Louise Chaplin, EES Student Ambassador

Why did you choose UMaine and the EES program?

I am from Maine, and the outdoor spaces of Maine are not something you want to leave once you’ve been here a while! It is also very important to me that UMaine values sustainability and our impact on the earth. Sustainability is one of my main interests and concerns, which is why I chose to be an EES major.

Why did you choose your particular concentration?

I chose the concentration of Sustainability, Environmental Policy, and Natural Resource Management so that I can educate and advise as the world makes the transition to sustainability. As a career, this could be working with schools, towns, or companies to become environmentally sustainable.

Best hands-on experience?

Working with my hometown to pass a Climate Emergency Declaration, which is basically a statement that commits the town to reduce carbon emissions and addressing climate change as an emergency.

What do you do when you aren’t studying or attending classes?

I love hiking, sailing, canoeing, cooking, and watching movies! I’m also a part of Divest UMS and the Coastal Youth Climate Coalition.

Any wisdom or advice for prospective EES students?

Have an open mind about everything and everyone! You will find the most unexpected friends and experiences here. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, but work hard and stay confident, and you’ll be successful!
