EES Graduate Students Receive Awards

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. EES graduate students have been receiving some well-deserved recognition. The Center of Undergraduate Research (CUGR) hosted its annual symposium at the Bangor Cross Insurance Center April 10. Graduate students Jennifer Smith-Mayo, Rafa Tasnim and Joe Mohan won the Graduate Interdisciplinary Research Poster Award. Isaac Sheppard and Catherine Hamley received Chase Distinguished Research Fellowships, which are awarded by the Graduate School.

EES students were also recognized at the Edith Patch award ceremony held April 28 at the University Club. Christine Conte, a Master’s Degree student was recognized for her research, which focuses on the relationship between forest management practices and Lyme Disease transmission. Melissa Flye, Megan Hess, Emma Fox, and Sonja Birthisel were distinguished nominees.

Two students were recognized by the Mitchell Center. Emma Fox received the Outstanding Mentorship of a Student Award for her work with students on the NEST Future of Dams project. Parker Gassett, a Master’s student in Marine Policy and Marine Biology, was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Research by a graduate student, for work on the Ocean and Coastal Acidification in Maine project
