Channel bottom detection article with SECS co-author receives 2017 Best Technical Note award.

Article by Buscombe, Grams and Smith highlighting work in the Penobscot River selected as 2017 Best Technical Note by the editor of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering. The research focused on the use of low cost side-scan sonor to detect bottom surface textures in rivers. The work was led by Dan Buscombe at the USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC). Data and results used as examples included measurements on the West branch of the Penobscot River in 2013 during a trip involving UMaine faculty from the SECS and Senator George J. Mitchell Center, as well as two researchers from the GCMRC.
