{"id":1551,"date":"2018-05-02T10:47:23","date_gmt":"2018-05-02T14:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/?page_id=1551"},"modified":"2024-09-10T09:51:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T13:51:05","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"About Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Maine purchased the 25 acre property in 1999. \u00a0The location on Taunton Bay in Franklin Maine is stunningly beautiful and home to wildlife such as horseshoe crabs, bald eagles, bears, moose, blue herons, bobcats, tree frogs and seals.<\/p>\n<p>The site\u2019s history as an aquaculture facility began ten years earlier when Penobscot Salmon built what was at the time a state of the art recirculating salmon farm. \u00a0That company raised salmon to smolt stage in the land based farm and then moved the fish out to net pens in nearby Frenchman Bay. \u00a0The facility changed ownership a number of times between 1989 and 1999. Atlantic salmon and Arctic char were both grown here.<\/p>\n<p>After taking over the property in 1999 we set about modernizing and expanding the facilities, upgrading the aquaculture systems to include innovative recirculating technologies and waste water treatment, and bringing the facility up-to-date with building and safety codes.\u00a0 In 2003 the <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/maine-aquaculture-business-incubator\/\">Maine Aquaculture Business Incubator <\/a>(MABI) building was constructed with funds from a Maine Technology Institute Cluster Enhancement award, adding 1,200 m<sup>2<\/sup> (11,500 SF) of multi purpose space for business incubation and R&amp;D.\u00a0 In 2005 we built the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/marine-hatchery\/\">Taunton Bay Hatchery\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>with funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. \u00a0This state-of-the-art\u00a0 facility was designed as a multi-species fish hatchery to produce marine fish juveniles for industry and research.\u00a0 The marine hatchery continues to evolve as new species, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/yellowtail\/\">California yellowtail<\/a>, are reared for the very first time in Maine.\u00a0 In 2009 we installed\u00a0 new rearing systems in the hatchery and renovated some older systems.\u00a0 The CCAR continues to grow and change with every passing year. Recent additions include the 21,500 SF <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/maine-aquaculture-technology-lab-matl\/\">Maine Aquaculture Technology Lab<\/a> built in 2013, which houses two in-ground 1,100 m<sup>3<\/sup> tanks, and a bunkhouse to provide housing for workers and researchers.\u00a0 We now have close to 100,000 SF of lab, tank room, and business incubator space.<\/p>\n<p>Our initial focus was on developing aquaculture for cold or temperate water marine fish such as\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/halibut\/\">Atlantic halibut<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/cod\/\"> Atlantic cod,<\/a> and we continue to improve the technology and physical capacity to farm them. \u00a0More recently we have expanded to warm water species found in more tropical waters, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/cooperative-aquaculture\/yellowtail\/\">California yellowtail <\/a>(<em>Seriola lalandi<\/em>).\u00a0 We also work with invertebrates and marine algae including polychaete worms, sea urchins and nori.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 construction began on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/main\/site_main.htm?modecode=80-30-10-00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USDA Agriculture Research Service National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center<\/a>. \u00a0This is co-located with the CCAR and the two facilities share much of their water supply and waste discharge infrastructure. \u00a0Together, the two facilities make up one of the most modern and effective aquaculture research and development campuses in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Maine purchased the 25 acre property in 1999. \u00a0The location on Taunton Bay in Franklin Maine is stunningly beautiful and home to wildlife such as horseshoe crabs, bald eagles, bears, moose, blue herons, bobcats, tree frogs and seals.
