The University of Maine and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has dedicated faculty and staff to assist you through this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During your first academic year at the University of Maine, you will be encouraged to complete courses that not only fulfill General Education categories, but that also go towards a major of interest. Through various Group Advising Sessions, one-on-one advising meetings and joint programs with campus resources like the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Career Center<\/a>, students will receive guidance and support while selecting a major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to making an appointment with an Academic Advisor in the CLAS Advising Center, take time and review the available majors offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. There are numerous majors and minors for CLAS student to choose from. For a complete list, please visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/las\/majors-and-minors-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academics<\/a> page of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appointments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every student at the University of Maine is assigned a faculty advisor within their major. To find your faculty advisor, check your MaineStreet account. Students can also book an appointment with advisors in the Advising and Academic Services Center before faculty advisors have been assigned or for questions or concerns beyond the scope of a faculty advisor&#8217;s expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/clasadvisingcenter\/our-staff\/\">Schedule an appointment with an advisor in the Academic Services Center.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Access your Degree Progress Report from your <a href=\"https:\/\/peportal.maine.edu\/psp\/PAPRD\/EMPLOYEE\/EMPL\/h\/?tab=PAPP_GUEST\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MaineStreet<\/a> Account. For help accessing your Degree Progress report, <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/clasadvisingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/315\/2012\/09\/PartialborderDirections-on-Accessing-Degree-Progress-Report.pdf\">click here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill out a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/clasadvisingcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/315\/2013\/02\/Gen-Ed-Requirements-Worksheet-Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Education Worksheet<\/a>&nbsp;and bring it to your meeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare a brief list of questions (e.g., where is a certain department, when do I declare a major, selecting courses).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write your appointment date and time in your calendar. Please contact an Academic Adviser&nbsp;<strong>prior<\/strong>&nbsp;to your meeting if you need to reschedule.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General Education Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every University of Maine academic program is based upon a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. The University\u2019s goal is to ensure that all of its graduates, regardless of the academic majors they pursue, are broadly educated persons who can appreciate the achievements of civilization, understand the tensions within it, and contribute to resolving them. This component is called general education, and it amounts to about one-third of every program. The design of general education at the University of Maine is meant to be flexible within the broad goals it seeks to achieve. It affords each student many ways of meeting its requirements, which, in addition to its English requirement, fall into six broad categories: Human Values and Social Context, Science, Ethics, Mathematics, Writing Competency and Senior Capstone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All UMaine students must complete these general education requirements, which are counted in the total credits required for graduation and may be contained in the Major Requirements as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>General Education Categories and Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ENG 101<\/strong>&nbsp;(College Composition)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18 credits in&nbsp;<strong>Human Values and Social Context<\/strong>&nbsp;(at least 3 credits must be taken within each sub-category; a single course may satisfy more than 1 sub-category). Categories include: Western Cultural Tradition, Social Context &amp; Institutions, Cultural Diversity &amp; International Perspectives, Population &amp; the Environment, and Artistic &amp; Creative Expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 courses in&nbsp;<strong>Science<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 course in&nbsp;<strong>Ethics<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 credits in&nbsp;<strong>Mathematics<\/strong>&nbsp;(including statistics and computer science, only 3 credits in computer science can count toward this requirement)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 courses which are designated as&nbsp;<strong>Writing Intensive<\/strong>&nbsp;(1 must be within the major)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1&nbsp;<strong>Capstone Experience<\/strong>, where the student integrates the components of his or her undergraduate training to perform at a professional level. Download and install the free Adobe Reader application from Adobe to fill in and save the form before submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Midterm Grading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy for students to maintain full awareness of how they\u2019re doing in their classes. The Midterm Grading Pilot project is intended to help shrink that awareness gap by piloting midterm grading in select sections of six Gateway courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grades given will be D (includes C-) and F only. This streamlined approach to grading minimizes extra work for instructors, simplifies interpretation of the grade for students, and keeps the focus on the students most in need of help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of midterm grading is to prompt students to take appropriate action\u2013whether by developing strategies for success in the remainder of the course, or by withdrawing to protect their GPA. The Midterm Grading Pilot is organized by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean\u2019s Office as part of the Gateways to Success dimension of UMS TRANSFORMS, which is funded by the Harold Alfond Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For FAQs and more, visit the Midterm Grading Project page <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/clasadvisingcenter\/midterm-grading-project\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Academic Probation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of each semester, your transcript will be reviewed to establish your academic standing.
