They have risen 73% in the last ten years. (NBCNews, 2015)<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>On average, students pay over $1,000 on textbooks each year. Due to the rising costs of textbooks, many students forgo purchasing a personal copy. (USNews, 2014)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students who have such restricted access to course materials limit their chances to succeed. CITL collaborates with its campus partners, most especially the Fogler Library, to work with professors and departments to locate or develop and deliver free, low-cost or open-licensed textbook alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, a number of online open educational resources provide free access to the public. Educational resources and applications such as <a href=\"https:\/\/openstax.org\/\">OpenStax<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merlot.org\/merlot\/index.htm\">Merlot II<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/open.umn.edu\/opentextbooks\/\">Open Textbook Library<\/a> have free or\u00a0 affordable peer-reviewed educational materials.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/news\/blog\/2016\/03\/29\/helping-keep-costs-umaine-students\/\">UMaine Textbook Alternative\u00a0Initiative<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College textbook prices have risen over 1041% over the last three decades.
