DESCRIPTION:In-person workshop \niClickers (or other response systems) can be an extremely effective tools to engage your students in content and their own learning while simultaneously informing you about student thinking. To be maximally effective\, key factors need to be considered. In this workshop\, we will present research and approaches on how to maximize the information gained using classroom response devices. Participants will have an opportunity to practice writing your own questions and brainstorming how you might use these tools in your teaching. After\, participants will have time to reflect on their clicker practice this semester\, identify areas of improvement or change\, and receive feedback from both peers and facilitators. SUMMARY:Three simple steps to make your assignments more transparent and inclusive
DESCRIPTION:In-person workshop \n  \nThe transparency in learning and teaching framework (TILT) is based on research which showed that by using transparent methods\, learning\, retention and self-efficacy is raised for all students\, and in particular for first-generation students and other underrepresented groups (Winkelmas et. al.\,  2016). Building transparent assignments is one concrete way to make your course more inclusive and accessible to diverse learners. In this workshop you will be trained on the simple core components of transparent assignment design\, how to evaluate assignments for transparency\, and peer-review assignments to identify areas where transparent methods could be applied. You will leave this workshop with a modified version of one assignment illustrating how to build transparency into your teaching practice. SUMMARY:Equity-Fostering Syllabus Working Group
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid\, Biweekly\, Fridays from 10:00-11:00am \nThis is a collaborative\, faculty-led\, practically-oriented community focusing on fostering equity through developing our syllabi and engaging them meaningfully in class. The group will focus not only on “how-to” craft an inclusive/equity-centering syllabus\, but how to continue to engage the syllabus throughout the semester toward fostering equity in the classroom and institutionally. Meetings are intended to be conversational and collaborative workshops\, with attendees co-facilitating as/if needed\, and sharing and discussing syllabus elements\, engagement strategies\, successes\, and conundrums. SUMMARY:Considering alternative assessment strategies
DESCRIPTION:In-person workshop \nThe way that instructors assess student performance has a profound effect on how students experience learning and how instructors spend their time inside and outside of class. In this discussion\, participants will explore three alternatives to traditional grading that attempt to ameliorate the learning experience and make better use of instructors’ limited resources: Mastery Grading\, Contract Grading\, and Ungrading. Participants will reflect upon their current grading methods\, explore the use of alternative assessment practices\, and consider how they might implement them in their teaching context. Special attention will be given to how alternative grading methods can help instructors practice equity-focused teaching.  \nThis workshop has been postponed for a later date.

SUMMARY:Learning in the landscape: Teaching and learning at Hirundo Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:In-person program \nHirundo Wildlife Refuge is 2\,460 acres of conserved woodlands and wetlands just west of UMaine dedicated to preserving nature while providing educational\, and recreational opportunities to the public. Over the years\, faculty from anthropology and business to wildlife ecology have worked with Hirundo staff to extend learning beyond the walls of the classroom. CITL and the Hirundo staff are now partnering to increase support for faculty seeking ways to utilize this amazing\, living resource in their teaching.
