Difficult Dialogues Community of Practice
Thursday, February 15, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Monthly through Spring Semester
As a follow up to Dr. Libby Roderick’s campus visit in November, the Rising Tide Center and the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning will host a Difficult Dialogues Community of Practice.
These informal gatherings will be held monthly to allow for conversations about engaging in and managing challenging dialogues and topics in the classroom. Using the book “Start Talking” as a reference, we will share and practice strategies and discuss our own experiences of navigating challenging conversations. To accommodate varied schedules, we will hold discussions monthly on Mondays at 1pm and also on Thursdays at 2pm.
Our first meeting will be on Thursday, January 18th.
All meetings will take place in Fernald Hall Room 102. Refreshments will be provided so please register by using the links above if you plan to attend.
From the publisher: “This book tells the story of a partnership between two universities that spent several years exploring productive ways to engage difficult dialogues in classroom and academic settings. It presents a model for a faculty development intensive, strategies for engaging controversial topics in the classroom, and reflections from thirty-five faculty and staff members who field-tested the techniques. It is intended as a conversation-starter and field manual for professors and teachers who want to strengthen their teaching and engage students more effectively in important conversations.”
