2020 New Faculty Orientation for Full-Time and Part-Time Faculty

Our New Faculty Orientation serves as an introduction to the many services and opportunities at the University of Maine, and a way to get you prepared to teach for the fall.

This year, due to COVID-19 we are restructuring our New Faculty Orientation, to provide you with more flexibility and options and to enable us to adhere to social distancing and other safety guidelines.

What will NFO look like this year? We have great things in store!

Summer Opportunities to Learn

Ongoing workshops in strategies for online teaching, pedagogy, and inclusive teaching are available for you to engage with at any time during the summer.

Daily trainings to help you learn Brightspace, and ongoing trainings in Zoom (our web-conferencing tool) and Kaltura (our video streaming platform) are available to you throughout the summer.

All of our programs are (currently) held virtually via Zoom, so we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities at any point during the summer.

Synchronous Meeting to Network: Wednesday, August 19th – Thursday, August 20th

Mark your calendars for August 19-20.  During these two days we will provide you with opportunities to virtually connect with key members of our community – administrators, faculty, service directors, and each other!  Don’t worry, we will not be designing a two day Zoom meeting, but rather a sprinkling of sessions over the two days that you can opt into based on your interests and needs.

Tentative Schedule

New Faculty Seminar

Orientation extends well beyond your first few days here. As the semester unfolds we will explore timely aspects of working and living in Maine during a series of meetings through the fall. The New Faculty Seminar will provide ongoing opportunities to meet people on campus, get to know additional resources and provide timely and meaningful information.

Tentative Dates and Time

Wednesdays @ 2:00 – 3:00pm (virtual meetings)

  • September 16th
  • October 7th
  • October 28th
  • November 18th
  • December 9th

Topics will be aligned with timely occurrences happening in you classroom during the semester and also driven by the interest of the group. Time will also be dedicated to connecting you to additional resources (about anything!) on campus.  We will select a line up of guest speakers/informal mentors to join the conversation.  Stay tuned for more information and registration.
