This\u00a0webinar<\/span>\u00a0will begin with an overview by\u00a0Dr. Erik Blomberg (University of Maine)<\/a>\u00a0of\"Bat the ecology of tri-colored\u00a0bats<\/span>\u00a0and their status as a species that has been recently petitioned for listing through the Endangered Species Act. Dr. Blomberg will also discuss a previous CFRU-funded project on the ecology of northern long-eared\u00a0bats<\/span>\u00a0in Maine commercial forests.<\/p>\n

After this talk, adjunct faculty member\u00a0Michael Thompson (University of Maine School of Forest Resources), will speak on the role of forest certification in\u00a0bat\u00a0<\/span>conservation. Landowners in Maine who are certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative or the Forest Stewardship Council must consider the impact of forest management on wildlife, including\u00a0bats<\/span>, with additional emphasis placed on conserving habitats for rare, threatened, and endangered species.\u00a0This brief presentation will cover the obligations of certified landowners regarding conserving important wildlife habitats with more specific details regarding what to expect concerning\u00a0bats<\/span>\u00a0during annual certification audits.<\/p>\n

There will be time for questions following their presentations.<\/p>\n

Wende Mahaney of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the\u00a0Maine Field Office<\/a>\u00a0expert on\u00a0bats<\/span>, will introduce herself and be available to address questions as well.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0webinar<\/span>\u00a0will be held on\u00a0November 14th, 2018 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m<\/strong>.\u00a0EST\u00a0<\/strong>using Zoom web conferencing software. This\u00a0webinar<\/span>\u00a0is open to the public.<\/p>\n

About the Presenters<\/span><\/h2>\n

Erik Blomberg, PhD\u00a0<\/strong>is an assistant professor in the Department of Wildlife, Conservation Biology, and Fisheries at the University of Maine in Orono.<\/p>\n

Michael Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0is an environmental consultant and adjunct faculty member in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine in Orono.<\/p>\n
