SUMMARY:LSOG Management Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 2-hour virtual workshop on how to manage for LSOG forest in a commercial forest landscape. Part of the goal is to help us help you. We’ve learned a lot by spending quality time in the field with you in the last two years. We’re synthesizing what we’ve learned\, both from you and our research. We look forward to discussing it all on May 16. \nWorkshop topics will include: \nWhy does LSOG matter? What are the ecological reasons to conserve LSOG in the working forest landscape? \nHow do you know LSOG when you see it? We’ll introduce a new rapid-assessment-protocol that you can do in 15 minutes in the field. \nLSOG- from the stand to individual trees. LSOG ecological value derives mainly from big old trees\, sometimes in a stand\, and sometimes in riparian buffers\, or even isolated trees in a regeneration harvest. \nWays you can manage for LSOG in a working forest- We will review a “menu” of ways you could manage for LSOG in a working forest landscape\, from individual tree retention\, to patch retention\, to riparian buffers\, and stand-scaled maintenance and restoration of LSOG characteristics. Something for everyone! \nZoom details:\nTopic: LSOG Workshop\nDate/Time: Friday\, May 16\, 2025 10:00-noon Eastern Time (US and Canada)\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89853692600

SUMMARY:FVS Acadian Model Workshop for CFRU Members
DESCRIPTION:The CFRU project\, Refining the Acadian Model\, is nearing completion. Lead scientist Ben Rice will be offering an in-person workshop as one of the final deliverables for this project. Ben has been working on a user-guide that explains the model components. This workshop will be an accompaniment to the reference document and will help CFRU members learn more about the Acadian model and how to use it. The goal by the end of the workshop is to send members home with their laptops ready to do their own growth projections. This work will be held in-person. While we will offer a Zoom link for the event\, we encourage members to attend in-person. \nLunch and SAF credits will be available for attendees. Please sign up here.

SUMMARY:CFRU Fall Field Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please use this link to sign up! \nJoin the Cooperative Forestry Research Unit for a day in the field to visit areas recently affected by two forest defoliators\, spruce budworm (SBW) and forest tent caterpillar (FTC). Heightened activity from these insects in the spring and summer of 2024 has resulted in defoliated areas in Aroostook County and beyond. We’ll hear from the Maine Forest Service to discuss potential impacts on forest health\, get input from CFRU members on how they are monitoring damage with remote sensing and UAS\, discuss options and strategies to curb these forest pests populations and hear from CFRU scientists on related research. \nField tour details & logistics:\n• CFRU will have 2 vans leaving from UMaine for Madawaska after the Advisory Committee Mtg. on Oct. 23rd. Save your seat and RSVP.\n• Need a room in the area on the night of the 23rd? Check out Inn of Acadia in Madawaska. CFRU has blocked rooms until October 11th for $139. Call (207) 728-3402 and tell them you’re with the UMaine for the group rate.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Mapping and managing for late-successional forests in Maine's commercial forest landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Join long-time funded CFRU scientist\, John Hagan of Our Climate Common\, for a workshop based on his most recently funded CFRU work. John’s team is using LiDAR-derived canopy height models to pick up tall trees across Maine’s commercial forestlands and then ground truthing the data to assess for additional ecological late-successional attributes\, such as lungwort lichen\, large downed logs\, and more. Come learn about the project process thus far and how Hagan’s work is changing the way we think about late-successional trees and stands. \nThis workshop will take place on Zoom from 9:30AM – 11:00AM on Thursday\, December 7th\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Mixedwood Management Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of Laura Kenefic’s (USFS) most recent CFRU project\, Mixedwood Management: Silviculture for Hardwood-Softwood Mixtures in Maine\, a practitioner-oriented workshop will be held on Wednesday\, September 20th\, starting at 9AM at the Gorman Chairback Lodge on AMC lands. This daylong workshop will be supported by the most recent FIA report on the status and trends of mixedwood in Maine. Invited speakers will include mixedwood ecology and management researchers with expertise in spruce–fir–hardwoods\, oak–pine\, and hemlock–hardwoods\, in addition to other regionally important forest types\, both from the research team and the larger Mixedwooder group (e.g.\, Dave MacLean\, Christel Kern\, and others). Mixedwood experts from other forest types will attend to participate in break-out groups and in-field discussions. The purpose of this workshop will be to present the latest research results and ideas about mixedwood management to practitioners\, engage in discussion about knowledge gaps related to mixedwood management in Maine\, and visit mixedwood sites to consider alternatives. To sign up\, follow this link.
