The CARE Lab in collaboration with researchers at MUSC provided evidence that slower gait speed mediates the relationship between falling and depression in older adults with cognitive concerns.

These findings have important treatment implications as primarily physical interventions for fall risk may not be as effective for those with depression and cognitive impairments. This work also demonstrates the clinical utility of gait speed assessment for fall risk in a memory clinic setting and emphasizes the importance of routine screening for depression and MCI in those that have fall histories.
