When should my student start utilizing your services?

We encourage students to visit us early and throughout their time at The University of Maine.  The Career Center offers  a variety of services that span the needs and various developmental processes of our students throughout their undergraduate and graduate years on our campus.  One of the best reasons for a student to visit us early on is to assist them in choosing a major if they are undecided or unsure of their current major.  We can also help them gain a clearer picture of how their chosen major connects to internship and career opportunities.  First year students also find the Career Center helpful in updating their high school resume to fit the expectations of employers looking to hire our students for part time on and off campus jobs in their first year.  There are many specific ways that we can help first year and new transfer students as soon as they arrive on campus.  Please encourage your student to utilize our services early and often.

Where can I find information on important career related events at UMaine?

We offer several career related events throughout the academic year.  We hold our Engineering Job Fair each October and our all majors Career Fair each February.  We also offer several career-cluster events including a Federal Jobs workshop, Careers in Outdoor Recreation,  and Careers In Law and Justice.  We host several employers in a variety of industries for information sessions and on campus interviews for internships and full time positions. The Career Center also hosts specialty events including a Graduate School Information Night and visits from our area Peace Corps representative.

Do you place students in jobs and internships?

While we do not place students in jobs or internships, we are happy to assist your student in their efforts to gain all of the skills necessary for locating and applying for job and internship opportunities.  The foundation of skills that students learn from our counselors will serve them well throughout their career.  With an ever changing and evolving career landscape, students who visit us will be well prepared to shift, pivot and innovate to meet the demands of our changing economy and advancing technological landscape.

We offer internship and job search strategy sessions where we can brainstorm possibilities and help students find opportunities that match.  We assist students with resume and cover letter reviews, and are happy to help them tailor their materials to a particular opportunity of interest.  Our counselors meet with students for interview coaching and mock interview appointments to help them prepare for in person, online and telephone interviews.  We offer recruiting suite space with a landline telephone and computer for students who have an online or telephone interview.

How can my student find you/make an appointment?

We are located on the 3rd floor of the Memorial Union.  Your students has likely been to the Union to visit the Bookstore, the MaineCard Office, or to eat a meal in the Bears Den.  Students may schedule an appointment in a variety of ways.  They can stop by our front desk during our regular business hours (typically 8-4:30) or they can give us a call at (207)581-1359.

We also offer walk-in hours on a rotating daily schedule when school is in session.  Please refer your student to our website for our current walk-in hours.

What if my student can’t pinpoint an exact reason for visiting (resume, job search strategy) but just needs general guidance?

We are here to help!  Your student can schedule a Career Counseling appointment with any of our counselors to discuss current areas of concern, future plans or anything in between.  If during our meeting we find that there is another campus resource that can also help (Financial Aid, Tutoring, Residence Life, etc), we will help the student make a connection with that resource as well.
