NCITE Presents: A Day in the Life of a Homeland Security Professional

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
The panel offers insight into how students and professionals can enter the counterterrorism workforce in places such as DHS. Our panelists will talk about what the Homeland Security environment is like, show students and those who wish to work in counterterrorism how they can get into a career, and highlight the workforce that is needed in STEM and Homeland Security fields.

PANELISTS
Dr. Trace Lasley is a professor of practice in the Department of Justice, Law, and Criminology in American University’s School of Public Affairs. He is also a historian with DHS Homeland Security Investigations. His work supports investigations and prosecutions of suspected human rights violators and war criminals. His research agenda and teaching interests include terrorism, civil war, illicit organization behavior, transnational crime, and human rights. He also helps students in career planning, resumes, interviewing and other skills. Dr. Lasley received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Kentucky.

Ms. Conchita Garcia is currently a program analyst at DHS. Ms. Garcia joined DHS as a Pathways Intern in 2017 and has held various roles, including administrative support for a collateral duty assignment as Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary for Management. Upon graduation in 2018, Garcia accepted a full time offer with DHS as a Program Analyst within the Department’s Management Directorate where her focus area is Legislative Affairs. Garcia graduated from American University in May of 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies (Communications, Law, Economics, and Government), minor in Terrorism and Security Studies and a Certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies.
