What Comes Next After Graduation

For those of you who are graduating in 2018, we want to give you the heartiest of UMaine congratulations! You’ve worked long and hard to achieve your goals, and we wish you all the best in your next endeavors.

However, graduation can feel very nerve wracking if you don’t have a plan in place for what comes next. If you’re not sure, don’t despair. There are a lot of different opportunities you can take advantage of, and the Career Counselors at the University of Maine Career Center can assist you with finding which ones are right for you.

How do you start if you’re not sure what comes next? One of the easiest things to do is to schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor to explore your career options. We can show you different resources to help with your job search, help you identify areas of interest as well as connect you with alumni who are in your area of interest. We also recommend connecting with your professors to ask for their advice or feedback on a job search. Many faculty are connected to employers in their field of study, and are excellent sources of information or job leads.

We sometimes have students tell us they’re frustrated because they’ve been applying to multiple jobs but are getting rejected or aren’t hearing back. If you’ve been applying for positions but not getting a positive response, or making it through to the interview without getting a call back, come see us. We can help you review your resume, cover letter, CV or any other application materials you may have. Sometimes, a simple adjustment can be what you need to make a great impression on a recruiter or a hiring manager.

Once you’ve landed an interview, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by nerves. This is where scheduling a mock interview can help. Come in to the Career Center and we will put you through an interview with questions tailored to the type of job or field you’re applying for. We can also record the interview and go over it with you after to provide suggestions or feedback on ways you can improve or make adjustments before you go to your interview.

The Career Center is easy to find; we are located at 300 Memorial Union (the third floor) or you can make an appointment with us by calling 581.1359. Alumni are also more than welcome to utilize our services, so even if you’ve already graduated, we are glad to help. Give us a call today!
