Engineering Job Fair

If you’re an Engineering student at the University of Maine in any discipline, it’s time to start planning for the 2017 Engineering Job Fair, hosted by the Career Center. Every year, the Career Center works to bring you a diverse assortment of companies and this year we are pleased to offer 127 different companies, firms and organizations for you to meet. The Engineering Job Fair will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 18th in the New Balance Recreation Center right here on campus. You might have a few questions about the job fair, so here are our suggestions on how to make the day work best for you:

Question: I’m a first year student. Should I go?
Answer: Absolutely! Companies are constantly searching for new talent, and it’s ideal to meet them as soon as possible.

Question: What should I bring to the Engineering Job Fair?
Answer: Whenever you attend a job or career fair, make sure to bring several copies of your up-to-date resume printed on good quality paper. You can visit the Career Center to get your resume reviewed prior to the Job Fair. On 10/16 and 10/17, the Career Center will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. for extended walk in hours.

Question: What should I wear?
Answer: When attending a job or career fair, you should plan to dress appropriately and professionally. For women, consider suits, khakis, dress pants, blouses or conservative dresses with jackets or cardigans. For men, appropriate attire includes ironed dress pants or khakis paired with a button down top. Ties and jackets are also appropriate, as are dress shoes. Everyone should avoid blue jeans, sneakers, flip flops, athletic gear and anything revealing. It’s also best to avoid wearing over the top patterns or too many accessories. This is your first opportunity to make an impression on your future employers, so show them you’re ready for the part!

Question: How do I make the best use of my time at the job fair?
Answer: Do your research ahead of time. Visit the Career Center’s website and peruse the list of employers. Check out a few companies that seem to be of interest to you, visit their websites to learn about their work and projects. Make a list of 3-5 companies you absolutely want to visit with on the day of, and go straight to those tables as soon as you arrive. After you’ve made your planned connections, wander around and meet other employers as well.

Question: I landed an interview with my dream company. What do I do?
Answer: First of all, congratulations! If you’re feeling nervous about your upcoming interview, you can schedule an appointment with the Career Center for a mock interview or for interview practice. We will work with you to help you prepare for what is sure to be an amazing interview. You can schedule by calling our front desk 581.1359 or by visiting us on the third floor of the Memorial Union in Room 300.
