2021-2022 Foreign Language and Areas studies (FLAS), Canadian-American Center Fellowships, New England-Atlantic Provinces-Québec Fellowships: Call for nominations

The Canadian-American Center at the University of Maine would like to announce that it is now accepting applications and nominations for Foreign Language and Areas studies (FLAS) Awards,
Canadian-American Center Fellowships, and New England-Atlantic Provinces-Québec
Fellowships.

Academic Year FLAS support students who wish to improve proficiency in French or Maliseet,
Mi’kmaq/Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Abenaki/Penobscot.

Full-time students who are US citizens or permanent residents, are eligible to apply. FLAS
Fellowships are administered by the Canadian- American Center at UMaine, and are awarded on
a merit basis through annual competitions.

The recipient of a FLAS award receives tuition and a stipend.

Academic Year (AY) FLAS:

For Undergraduate students, the Awards offer a $5,000 stipend, cover tuition up to $10,000, and
50% of health insurance premiums if bought through UMaine.

For Graduate students, the Awards offer a $18,000 stipend, cover tuition up to $18,000, and 50%
of health insurance premiums if bought through UMaine.

Summer FLAS: up to $5,000 in tuition and $2500 living stipend. Undergraduate and graduate
students are eligible.

Undergraduates are:

  • Eligible for intermediate- or advanced-level study of Maliseet, Mi’kmaq/Micmac,
    Passamaquoddy, and Abenaki/Penobscot, but not French.

Graduates are:

  • Eligible for intermediate- or advanced-level study of French or Maliseet,
    Mi’kmaq/Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Abenaki/Penobscot.
  • Eligible for beginning-level language study in exceptional circumstances.  If you already
    have advanced proficiency in French, you are eligible to apply for a FLAS to support for beginning-level study of Maliseet, Mi’kmaq/Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Abenaki/Penobscot.
  • Ineligible for beginning-level language study of French.

FLAS awards are available to students from all programs who will be working on Canada (in
part or entirely) in their thesis, independent study or dissertation.

Canadian-American Center Fellowships

  • Available to graduate students in all disciplines focusing on Canada or Canadian-
    American relations
  • Stipend (see Graduate School for updated amounts), plus a tuition waiver, and 50% of
    health insurance covered
  • Awards available to citizens of any country
    New England-Atlantic Provinces-Québec Fellowships
  • Available to graduate students engaged in cross-border research
  • One fellowship is reserved for a graduate student in History
  • A stipend (see Graduate School for updated amounts), plus a tuition waiver, and 50% of
    health insurance covered
  • Awards available to citizens of any country
