Outdoor Programs To Introduce Opportunities to New Students (OPTIONS):

Excited to begin your life at UMaine? Then Maine Bound’s OPTIONS trips are for you. OPTIONS trips are outdoor trips with a focus on teaching you outdoor skills and helping you prepare for your upcoming college experience by meeting awesome new people, making lasting friendships, learning about University life from experienced UMaine students, and making connections that will accelerate your sense of belonging to the community.

OPTIONS is a unique student orientation program.  New students camp, eat, interact, and explore Maine with UMaine staff, faculty, and student trip leaders from the Maine Bound Adventure Center. The OPTIONS experience begins and ends on the UMaine Campus. The time in-between will be spent in the great Maine outdoors.

Registration will begin the first day of Summer Orientation, June 26th, 2017.  SPACE IS LIMITED and fills up fast so register early!


Trips

Expeditions:  August 20-25,  2017

Price:  $500 (All Inclusive)

  • Baxter Backpacking Traverse : Start at the North Gate of Baxter State Park.  Hike south, camping along the way, before attempting to summit Katahdin.
  • Penobscot River Canoeing: We will spend 4 days canoeing along the beautiful Penobscot River Corridor, culminating with a scenic paddle to our take-out on Chesuncook Lake.

Adventures:  August 23-25,  2017

Price:  $300 (All Inclusive)

  • North Woods Adventure:  Head up to Baxter State Park to Penobscot Outdoor Center. To experience all Northern Maine has to offer.
  • Coastal Island Adventure: Venture down to the mid-coast to blueberry cove camp to explore the coast and surrounding islands.

Expeditions Details

Trip Itinerary:

  • Sunday August 20: Meet at 8:00 a.m at the Maine Bound Adventure Center, move into your residence hall and travel to your chosen destination.
  • Monday August 21 & Tuesday August 22: Traverse Baxter State Park from North to South, or canoe along the Penobscot River and Chessuncook Lake.
  • Wednesday August 23: Finish your multi-day adventure and join up with the North Woods Adventure group at Penobscot Outdoor Center (see description below).

Early Arrival Option – $30:  Arrive at the Maine Bound Adventure Center (MBAC) after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and stay there overnight.  Dinner, activities and a space on the MBAC floor for your sleeping mat are included in fee.  In addition, you will have the ability to move into your residence hall this evening. Please indicate on the registration form if you want to stay Saturday night.

Our base camp is the 60-acre Penobscot Outdoor Center (POC), with its amazing views of Mt. Katahdin, great tent-camp sites with a group campfire ring, and outdoor volleyball courts. Meals will be cooked and served outdoors.  On Thursday you will embark on an adventure activity of your choice (with picnic-style lunch), then return to camp for supper and group activities.  On Friday we’ll go whitewater rafting on the Penobscot River before returning to campus.

Trip Itinerary:

  • Wednesday August 23: If you didn’t attend the Expedition portion of OPTIONS, you’ll drop off your belongings at your residence hall at 1:00 p.m., check in at the Rec Center parking lot, and leave for POC at 2:30 p.m.
  • Thursday August 24: Choose your own adventure from the list of activities below.
  • Friday August 25: Whitewater rafting on the “gorge section” of the Penobscot River. Return to campus in the afternoon.

Adventure Activity Choices: Each activity will be guided by a Maine Bound student instructor and/or professional UMaine staff.

  • Hiking: A strenuous hike up Mt. Katahdin, or a casual hike with breath taking views up Sentinel Mountain or South Turner Mountain, all located in Baxter State Park. Many trail options available.
  • Canoeing: Flatwater paddling on the beautiful Debskoneag Lakes.
  • Rock Climbing: Challenge yourself at Fat Man’s Woes.
  • White Water Kayaking: Basic movement and paddling class on the Penobscot River.
  • Back Woods Bouldering: A fun bouldering adventure in the woods near Debskoneag.
  • Sea Kayaking: Rescues, maneuvers, and paddling strokes will be covered during this activity on Ambejejus Lake.

Accommodations: Tent style camping.


Coastal Islands Adventure Details

Our base camp is the 25-acre Blueberry Cove camp in Tenant’s Harbor, with bunkhouse cabins nestled in a mature spruce forest with 1400′ of protected ocean frontage, a swimming beach, and a 1/2-acre organic garden.  Meals will be served buffet-style in the dining hall.  On Thursday you will embark on an adventure activity of your choice (with picnic-style lunch), then return to camp early in the afternoon for group fitness/recreation activities and supper.  On Friday we’ll take a 2-hour sail on a Schooner.

  • Wednesday August 23: Drop off your belongings at your residence hall at 1:00 p.m., check in at the Rec Center parking lot, and leave for Blueberry Cove at 2:30 p.m.
  • Thursday August 24: Choose your own adventure from the list of activities below. Upon returning to camp there will be time for group recreation activities for those who wish. Zumba, gardening or a trail run for some examples.
  • Friday August 25: Embark from Belfast Harbor on a Schooner adventure. Return to campus in the afternoon.

Adventure Activity Choices: Each activity will be guided by a Maine Bound student instructor and/or professional UMaine staff.

  • Hiking: A hike through the scenic forest around Tenant’s Harbor.
  • Canoeing: Paddle to Clark Island to swim in the fresh water quarries.
  • Stand Up Paddleboarding: We’ll try a fast-growing sport that requires minimal equipment and is loads of fun. Explore yoga on the SUPs in the peaceful salt marsh.
  • Sea Kayaking: We’ll practice rescues, maneuvers, and paddling strokes as we explore the iconic Maine coast.

Accommodations: Cabin bunk beds, dining hall meals. Bring your own bedding.
