Intramural Athletic Association Constitution

Article I – Name
The name of the organization shall be “The Intramural Athletic Association of the University of Maine”.
Article II – Object
The object of this organization shall be to encourage and promote sports activities among the students at the University of Maine, through the competition of teams representing fraternities, sororities, residence halls, independent groups, faculty, and staff.
Article III – Membership
Any undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty, or staff member of the University may participate in any of the UMaine Intramural Sports Program activities under the following restrictions:
a. There will be three competitive divisions, the Greek leagues composed of all the fraternities and/or sororities, the residence hall leagues composed of all the residence halls, and the independent leagues composed of off-campus, graduate students, faculty and staff. Independent and residence hall teams will compete in a non-Greek division if there is a sufficient number of a team to have a separate division for each area.
b. Women will compete in a women’s division. Teams may be made up of any UMaine students, faculty or staff.
c. Coed activities may be part of the residence hall system or coed teams may be made up of independent groups. The only way coed teams can receive points for a residence hall is to have all members of the team be from that residence hall.
All residence halls should have at least one intramural representative from each floor. Residence halls are also encouraged to select an Intramural Sports coordinator from the residence hall who will oversee each representative and bring the residence hall together into a cohesive competitive unit.
Each fraternity and sorority is allowed one Intramural Sports representative.
All independent groups, which include faculty, staff, graduate students, off-campus, and special interest students, may have one representative from each group. Such interested groups or individuals should leave their name in the Campus Recreation office at the beginning of each semester.
Article IV – Intramural Protest Council and Meetings
To act on protests, policy changes or related matters, there will be a 3-person council appointed for each area: fraternity, sorority, residence hall, independent, and women The council overseeing each area will make decisions only regarding matters within that particular division. Meetings of the entire council, however, may be called to address program-wide matters.
Meetings of the Council shall be held as needed at a time and place designated by the Director of Campus Recreation.
Special meetings may be held at any time at the discretion of the Director of Campus Recreation or at the request of three or more Intramural Representatives
Each member of the council shall be represented by one vote. A council member may send a proxy.
A majority of the members of the council shall constitute a quorum.
Minutes of the Intramural Council meetings shall be sent to all Intramural Sports representatives.
All Intramural Sports representatives will be requested to attend a meeting in the fall semester of the academic year at which time their duties will be reviewed.
There will be captains’ meetings in certain events to discuss rules, procedures, and schedules.
Article V – Finances
Officials for UMaine Intramural Sports contests shall be paid according to University and federal standards for student wages.
Article VI – Eligibility
Any undergraduate student of the University may represent the Intramural Sports organization to which they belong, under the following restrictions:
a. If a varsity letter winner has won his/her letter in the sport in question at the University of Maine or at any four year bachelor-degree granting college or university, they must wait one year before playing that sport. Graduate varsity letter winners must sit out one year before competing in their sport as well. Exceptions to this rule must be submitted to the Director of Campus Recreation.
EXCEPTION: Any varsity letter winner dropped because of lack of ability from any sport in which they lettered will be permitted to participate in that sport with written permission from the coach of that sport and final approval of the Director of Campus Recreation.
b. Teams are limited to two ex-letter winners per team.
c. Letter winners will not be allowed to participate in coed activities in their sport.
d. Any player who competes with one team shall be ineligible to compete with any other team until the completion of that activity. A player is legally on the team on whose roster his/her name appears. If it appears on two or more, then eligibility is assigned to the first team for which the player plays.
EXCEPTION: Players on “B” teams may be moved up to the “A” team for their organization within the guidelines set forth for such.
e. A residence hall student moving from one floor to another or from one residence hall to another must continue with the same team in that activity until its completion. After that they must participate with their new affiliation.
f. Any residence hall resident who moves off-campus while an activity is in progress must finish that activity with the team with which they started. After that, they must compete in the independent division. An activity starts with the submission of entry form.
g. Any upper-class member is eligible for Intramural Sports participation regardless of the number of semesters in school as long as they are enrolled as a student and paid their fees. Graduate students will also be allowed to compete for their Greek, residence hall or independent team.
h. First-year students (including pledges) may compete for their fraternity or sorority only if they are living in the house, up until the Wednesday after fall break/Columbus Day. After this date, all first-year students are eligible to participate for their house if they are pledged and are on the vital statistics roster at the Greek Affairs Office.
i. Social brothers and sisters are also eligible to compete for their fraternity or sorority as long as they are enrolled in the university and are on the pledge list submitted to the Greek Affairs and/or Deans of Students office. A social brother or sister is generally defined as a brother or sister who lives outside the house.
j. People who are boarders of a Greek house but are not pledged members of the house will not be allowed to participate for that fraternity or sorority.
k. Live-in advisors will be allowed to participate in Intramural Sports for the fraternity or sorority they advise. Alumni advisors are not eligible to participate in Intramural Sports.
Anyone dropping or dropped from an intercollegiate squad is not eligible to participate in that sport intramurally unless they obtain written permission of the coach of that squad and final approval of the Director of Campus Recreation. Any student, however, who has been declared scholastically ineligible in the intercollegiate sport will also be ineligible for the similar or corresponding Intramural Sports activity.
All individuals who are professionals shall be ineligible to participate in the sport in which they are professionals, but they may participate in all other Intramural Sports activities.
NOTE: A professional is one who has received or does receive any gift, remuneration, or pay for their services as a player, or who plays in games with anyone who receives a gift, remuneration, or pay as a player.
No one is allowed to compete on an extramural basis as a unit representing any name connected with the University of Maine without written administrative authorization from the Director of Campus Recreation.
Off-campus men or women must play with an off-campus or independent team; residence hall residents must play with residence hall or independent teams; resident fraternity men must play for their fraternity or an independent team; non-resident fraternity men may play either for their fraternity or residence hall with a choice of only one of the two; resident sorority women must play for their sorority or an independent team; non-resident sorority women may play either for their sorority or residence hall with a choice of only one of the two; graduate students may play for a fraternity, residence hall, or independent team depending on their affiliation or residence; faculty and staff must play for a faculty/staff, independent, or coed team. Any exceptions to this rule must be submitted to the Director of Campus Recreation prior to participation for approval.
All games in which an ineligible player has played shall be considered as a forfeit, if contested within the required 24 hours from the contest in question.
Candidates for intercollegiate athletic squads (including red-shirted athletes) are not eligible for Intramural Sports participation in the sport (s) in which they are practicing and related (carry-over) activities as listed below:
- All Softball activities
- All Basketball activities
- All Football activities
- All Soccer activities
Swimming and Diving
- Swim Meets and Water Polo Activities
Track & Field/Cross Country
- Cross Country
- All Races & Triathlons
- Track & Field Meets
- All Volleyball and Wallyball Activities
Members of UMaine Sports Clubs will be allowed to participate in Intramural Sports in the activity related to their Sport Club but no Intramural Sports team may have more than 2 Sport Clubs members from the related Sports Club playing at one time. This rule also applies to coed sports as well.
Article VII – Rules Governing Games
Managers and captains shall be selected for various teams by each organization.
Each organization sponsoring a team in any activity may submit to the Campus Recreation office, prior to the entry deadline, a roster of people eligible for competition in that activity. Additions to the roster will be taken from activity score sheets. The organization shall be responsible for the eligibility of their players. Any questionable interpretation of eligibility shall be left to the Director of Campus Recreation or his/her designee upon request of that organization or in the event of a protest.
All contests shall be under the direct control of the Intramural Athletic Association through the committees and the officials so appointed to it.
No game shall be postponed without the consent of the managers of both teams and Campus Recreation.
Games should be postponed as far in advance as possible with coordination from the Campus Recreation office and involvement of both teams.
In case of the non-appearance of one team, the game shall be forfeited to the opposing team, within a reasonable time limit of 10 minutes. Teams forfeiting games during the regular seasons will not eligible for playoffs.
In any activity, the minimum required complement of players must be present in order to receive the win by forfeit. Exceptions will be noted in activity rules.
In case of the non-appearance of both teams each team will be given a defeat (loss by forfeit) in the percentage standings. Both teams will be charged forfeit points.
Protests must be presented to the Director of Campus Recreation within 24 hours of the protested situation. All protests will be referred to the Intramural Council. If any member of the Council is a representative of one of the units concerned in the protest, they shall be excluded from the voting. Officials’ judgment shall not be considered legitimate basis for protests and protests are not honored in certain activities as noted herein and/or in the activity rules.
Teams finding themselves with less than a full team at game time may choose a player at-large to play for their team with the understanding that the team will give their opponent a win. This process will allow teams to play without having to take a forfeit. Players at-large used illegally without notifying the opposing team will result in a forfeit with forfeit fees lost accordingly.
All players must be listed on their team’s roster to be eligible to participate. Campus Recreation will compile team rosters from entry forms and regular season scorecards. In round robin competition, players may be added to the roster up until the last game of the regular season. In single and double elimination activities, the players may be added up through the quarter final contests.
If an individual’s floor or section team is full, they may play for the next closest floor’s team that has room for them; provided the arrangement is approved by the IMAA Representative of both teams and notification is given to the Director of Campus Recreation.
Any varsity athlete who drops from the team before the first contest and that team has no cut list will be allowed to compete in the related or carry over Intramural Sports activity providing they conform to other general regulations of this constitution.
Any teams postponing or rescheduling games for which officials and/or supervisors are paid that do not follow the Rescheduling Procedure herein must pay the cost of the officials and/or supervisors before they will be permitted to replay the contest.
Teams cannot erase a forfeit for an opponent without replaying the contest. All replayed contests must be approved by and coordinated through Campus Recreation.
Article VIII – Point System Governing Intramural Sports Awards
Those activities allowing “B” teams to be entered will receive one-half of the allotted participation points of “A” teams. Fraternities will earn extra participation points for their 2nd team in the following sports (Flag Football, Soccer, Basketball, and Floor Hockey).
1. Basketball, Field Hockey, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball
- 30 points for participation
- 5 points for each league win
- 25 points for championship
- 15 points for finishing second
2. Softball, Kickball, Water polo, Broomball, Dodgeball, Wiffleball, Ultimate, Tug-o-War
- 20 points for participation
- 5 points for a win
- 25 points for championship
- 15 points for finishing second
3. Raquetball, Tennis, Ping Pong, 8 ball Tournament, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament
- 5 points for participation in singles
- 10 points for participation in doubles
- 2 points for winning each match for the team member that advances the farthest
- 10 points for championship
- 6 points for finishing second
4. Special Events
Bench Press Tournament
- 10 points for participation
- Top 5 points (5,4,3,2,1)
- 1 point per participant (max of 10 points)
- Team points: 15, 10, 7.5, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
- 10 points for participation
- Individual points for each event: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (not for BC Kent points)
- Relay points: 18, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 (not for BC Kent points)
- Individual points and relay points will be added up to make total team score
- Team score determines the winner of the meet
- Team points: 20, 15, 10, 9, 7.5, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (for BC Kent points)
Free Throw Contest, 3 Point Shot Contest
- 10 points for 4 or more participants
- 1 point per participant (max 10)
- Top 4 scorers make up team score
- Team points: 25, 20, 15, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4
Mountain Bike Race, Black Bear 5k
- 10 points for 2 or more participants (4 or more for 5k)
- 1 point per participant (max of 10)
- Top 5 points: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
- Team points: 15, 10, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
- 10 points for participation in at least half of the events
- 7,5, 4, 3, 2, 1 points for each event
Coed participation may be part of the points system for the residence halls. All participants must be from the same residence hall for coed teams to earn points. Coed teams that are comprised of off-campus students or students from different residence halls can participate as an independent team and no All-Points can be earned. Points for coed teams will be computed in the same way as men’s and women’s activities for the same sport and type of competition. Women’s participation is based solely on entering and participating in any women’s activity. Completing the season without forfeiting enables an organization to earn points. Points are allotted based on how many women it takes to comprise a team. Each residence hall is allowed a maximum of two teams.
- 1-2 women = 10 points
- 3-4 women = 15 points
- 5 and over = 20 points
Sorority Point System
The sorority point system uses the same guidelines and points as the fraternity point system with the following exceptions: for single elimination team events, teams earn 25 points for entering and competing; and for Round Robin events, 30 entry points are given.
The sorority system is composed of similar activities as the fraternity system. Activities to be included in the point system will be decided by the sorority intramural representatives.
Article IX – Awards
A team or individual winning any tournament or championship will win an Intramural Sports champion t-shirt. Teams winning t-shirts will receive 2 more than the number of recommend players. Additional t-shirts can be purchased from the UMaine Campus Recreation.
a. The B. C. Kent All Points Fraternity Trophy shall be awarded to the fraternity accumulating the most points in the Intramural Point System.
b. The Harold M. Woodbury All Points Trophy will be presented to the residence hall accumulating the most points in the Intramural
