SUMMARY:Exhibition: "The Teaching Portfolio: 45 years of Printmaking at the University of Maine"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Art’s Lord Hall Gallery will host the exhibition The Teaching Portfolio: 45 Years of Printmaking at the University of Maine from August 27-October 24\, 2025. A public reception will take place on September 26th from 5-7pm. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend. \nThe Teaching Portfolio is a collection of fine art working proofs and finished prints created in the UMaine printmaking studio by students\, alumni\, faculty\, and visiting artists. Covering a time span of 45 years\, under the direction of printmaking Professor Susan Groce\, this portfolio represents an impressive overview of the direction and growth of print media and the University of Maine printmaking studio program – from traditional materials and processes to the safer and greener processes and the incorporation of new technologies. The portfolio includes Collagraphs\, Etchings and Acrylic Resist Etchings\, Photopolymer Intaglio-Type Etchings\, Lithography\, Relief Printing\, Water-Based Screen Printing\, and Monoprints\, as well as prints made through the Printmaking Artist Residency Program and Student Portfolio Exchanges. Portland’s ongoing efforts include everything from reducing our carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy to equipping our community with the resources to adapt to a changing climate. Hear about the tangible steps the City of Portland is taking\, the challenges they’re addressing\, and the collaborative efforts underway to achieve Portland’s ambitious climate goals. \nKatie Tims is a Sustainability Associate at the City of Portland’s Sustainability Office. She implements programs to decarbonize and improve energy efficiency in municipal\, commercial\, and residential buildings\, helping the city achieve its One Climate Future goals. A Maine native and UMaine alumna\, where she contributed to a sustainability research team at the UMaine Mitchell Center focused on engaging stakeholders across the state in the effort to reduce food waste. Before joining the city\, she worked for UMaine Cooperative Extension\, conducting agricultural research\, and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection\, assisting municipalities and businesses with waste management.

Davis\, and Joel Murray will leave you gasping with the very witty scenes they invent before your eyes. Audience participation is key to the show so bring your suggestions and you might be asked to join the cast onstage! As the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator in Cumberland County\, she works closely with volunteers and community partners to develop educational initiatives that promote sustainable\, environmentally friendly gardening practices grounded in research-based information. Pamela also manages the UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farm\, a public garden and teaching site located in Falmouth. \nRegistration is required with a sliding scale program fee for each webinar. SUMMARY:Disability as a Multivalent Construct: Diagnosis\, Identity\, and Environment in the Representation of Disabled Realities
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This presentation highlights the many different ways that disability is conceptualized in social sciences research. By highlighting variations in both definition and operationalization of the term “disability” and related constructs\, it becomes clear that disability is part of a complex web of meaning with clear implications both for daily life and for academic research. Moreover\, by demonstrating the varying ways we can and should conceptualize disability\, this presentation will highlight how inattention to various facets of disability experience can be understood as a key feature of normal social science. The presentation closes by arguing that this inattention has real and lasting consequences for how and when disabled people can receive diagnoses\, think about disability as a feature of their identity\, and experience constructed environments. \nPresenter Bio: Ezekiel “Zeke” Kimball is Professor and Dean of the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Kimball’s research focuses on how to create the conditions for student success in PK-20 education systems. He is a leading expert on disability identity development\, postsecondary STEM learning environments\, and how academia leverages scholarly knowledge for social impact. Dr. Kimball’s research has resulted in 2 books and more than 75 journal articles and book chapters. His work has been supported by organizations such as  the National Science Foundation\, Spencer Foundation\, U.S. Department of Education\, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. Kimball is a past editor of the  Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability.

SUMMARY:4-H Family STEM Clubs – Series 1 in Lisbon Falls
DESCRIPTION:4-H Youth Development Program in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties\, a part of University of Maine Cooperative Extension\, will offer two\, 4-week Family STEM Club sessions this fall at the UMaine Extension office\, 24 Main Street in Lisbon Falls. \nFamilies will engage in hands-on STEM projects together\, with opportunities for adults to lead the activities with support from 4-H staff. Adults interested in learning how 4-H clubs operate and youth interested in joining 4-H are encouraged to attend. \nSeries 1 will be offered on Thursdays\, September 18 through October 9. Series 2 will be offered on Thursdays\, October 30 through November 20. All sessions will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Youth must be ages 5 to 11 and a resident of Androscoggin or Sagadahoc County to participate. \nParticipation is free however space is limited. During Fermentation Friday\, held at the UMaine Food Lab in Hitchner Hall\, participants cook\, create\, share\, and connect. Using recipes as starting points\, we explore fermentation\, storytelling\, food rescue\, and local food systems. SUMMARY:UMaine Marks 50th Anniversary of Rudy Vallée Day with Stein Song on Fogler Steps
DESCRIPTION:This Friday\, the University of Maine will celebrate a special milestone: the 50th anniversary of Rudy Vallée Day. To honor the occasion\, UMaine’s Traditions Societies\, the Senior Skulls Society\, All Maine Women\, Sophomore Owls\, and Sophomore Eagles\, will gather on the front steps of Fogler Library to lead the campus in a rousing performance of the “Maine Stein Song” at 4pm. \nThe event brings together a tradition that has united generations of Black Bears: singing the Stein Song\, the only college song to ever top the national music charts. Rudy Vallée\, a UMaine student in the 1920s\, brought the tune to the world when he recorded it in 1929. His performance turned a local fight song into a national hit and made him one of America’s biggest entertainers. \nThe State of Maine proclaimed the first Rudy Vallée Day in 1975\, when Vallée returned to Orono for his 50th class reunion. Fifty years later\, students will once again honor his legacy by singing on Fogler’s steps — a fitting backdrop\, since the library also houses UMaine’s Stein Collection\, a tribute to the song’s history. \nEvent Details:\nWhat: 50th Anniversary Rudy Vallée Day – Maine Stein Song Celebration \nWhen: Friday\, October 10\, 2025 at 4pm \nWhere: Steps of Fogler Library\, University of Maine\, Orono \nWho: Senior Skull Society\, All Maine Women\, students\, alumni\, and local community \n“This is about more than just a song\,” said a Senior Skull member helping to organize the performance. “It’s about the traditions that bring UMaine together. DESCRIPTION:From the journey of protons racing through the world’s largest particle collider to up-close views of the Big Bang and emergent universe\, and the nearly mile-deep descent to an underground experiment\, Phantom of the Universe immerses audiences in the search for dark matter. Explore this mysterious matter and how we are using discoveries at the Large Hadron Collider to get closer to discovering the true nature of Dark Matter. View the first hints of its existence through the eyes of Fritz Zwicky\, the scientist who coined the term “dark matter.” Explore the astral choreography witnessed by Vera Rubin in the Andromeda galaxy\, and then plummet deep underground to see the most sensitive dark matter detector on Earth\, housed in a former gold mine.  Speed alongside particles before they collide in visually stunning explosions of light and sound at Large Hadron Collider at CERN\, while learning how scientists around the world are collaborating to track down the constituents of dark matter. Executive Producer Michael Barnett of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory served as an advisor to PBS’s NOVA series Elegant Universe and the feature film Angels & Demons.
