SUMMARY:Design of functional hybrid semiconductors and their synthesis by solution state self-assembly
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture Series 2026\nDepartment of Chemistry & FIRST joint seminar\nJoin us as we welcome Robert M. Stolz\, Post-doctoral Scholar (Stanford University) \nSemiconductive materials that can form from solution by self-assembly offer unique benefits. Among the most compelling is the ability to rationally obtain new functional properties that are intrinsic to the material. Hybrid semiconductors contain both organic and inorganic components\, allowing them to access a wide range of tunable properties. I will share two examples of hybrid semiconductors that advance the design and synthesis of semiconductors from solution. In the first example I will present my work on porous semiconductive frameworks for gas phase and solution phase chemical sensing applications. I will show how surface chemistry and host-guest interactions inform the sensing mechanism and how selective chemical sensing can be achieved by controlling morphology and composition. In the second example I will share the development of new metal-halide heterostructures that can be grown as large single crystals from solution. These heterostructures can be synthesized with tunable dimensionality that modifies their optoelectronic properties. Together these projects will showcase how organic and inorganic chemical principles can combine to obtain material systems that provide fundamental insight into structure-property relationships and compelling functional properties. \nRobert began his chemical journey at Wesleyan University (CT) earning a BA and MA working with Brian Northrop developing click chemistry for the synthesis of dendritic polymers. After a brief stint in industry at Dupont and Dow Chemical companies\, he moved to Hanover to study materials chemistry at Dartmouth College (NH) with Katherine A. Mirica\, earning his PhD in 2021. His thesis focused on understanding how the surface chemistry of conductive framework materials enables them to act as transducers for gas phase and solution phase chemical sensing. After his PhD\, Robert moved to Stanford University (CA) in 2022 where he is currently a PRISM Baker Postdoctoral Fellow. His current research in halide perovskites uses small-molecule chemistry and solution-state techniques to synthesize new solid-state materials.

SUMMARY:New Writing Series — Kate Bernheimer
DESCRIPTION:Kate Bernheimer is a distinguished author\, scholar\, and editor celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to fairy tales. She is the author most recently of the novel Lion’s Den. She grew up in Massachusetts and is a Professor of English at the University of Arizona. \nThe New Writing Series represents the whole spectrum of possibilities for contemporary writing\, including poetry\, prose\, translation\, and new media\, with an emphasis on innovative\, adventurous\, and/or unduly neglected writing. In addition to giving public readings\, writers often visit classes or give workshops\, providing our students a sophisticated understanding of the contemporary world of creative writing.

SUMMARY:Wisdom without Science or Art: Phronēsis in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Greg Kirk (Northern Arizona University)\nIn Book Six of the Nicomachean Ethics\, Aristotle presents practical wisdom (phronēsis) as the intellectual virtue associated with the domain of action and deliberation. What is curious about practical wisdom is that it is the application of intellect\, according to Aristotle\, to a domain about which there is neither science nor art. This paper presents the domain of action as one in which the true – here understood as the wise choice of how to act – is an emergent property resulting from the combination of excellent character and astute observation of context\, admitting always of unique\, ephemeral choices. To act well – to live well – therefore requires one to be emotionally composed in a way that places one’s trust in cultivated insight. I use Aristotle’s account of what has come to be called the “practical syllogism” to illustrate this. \nPart of the 2026 Philosophy Colloquium Series.

SUMMARY:Maine Heritage Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Maine Heritage Lecture\, one of the signature annual events from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences\, is set to take place on October 22 at 3:00 PM in the Bodwell Lounge of the Collins Center for the Arts. \nThis year’s speaker is Gretchen Faulkner\, director of the Hudson Museum\, located in the CCA. She has been with the Hudson Museum since 1986 and became director in 2002. She oversaw the redesign of the Hudson Museum in 2009\, following the renovation of the Maine Center for the Arts\, now the Collins Center for the Art. She develops exhibits and programs that are grounded in the museum’s collections\, especially the museum’s Wabanaki holdings.

SUMMARY:Libra Lecture Series - The Tau of Ramanujan
DESCRIPTION:Δ(z) = q ∏ (1−qn)24 = ∑ τ(n)qn. The integer sequence τ(n)=1\, −24\, 252\, −1472\, 4830\, … defined by that equation was discovered and studied by the great Indian mathematician Ramanujan more than 100 years ago. These numbers — the values of the Ramanujan tau-function — have been the guiding force for several themes in number theory and still pose simple\, open problems today. This talk\, delivered by visiting Libra Professor Eknath Ghate\, will be a relaxed introduction to these numbers. \nVisiting Libra Professor Eknath Ghate is a Senior Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai\, India. Professor Ghate has spent his career chasing the deep and still-mysterious links between modular forms and Galois representations. In 2013 he received the Bhatnagar Prize\, India’s highest science honor. \nThis event will take place in Hill Auditorium in Barrows Hall. It is free and open to the public.
