SUMMARY:Mathematics Colloquium - Dynamics on Character Varieties over Finite Fields
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cigole Thomas\, Bates College \nAbstract: Character varieties arise as spaces that parametrize group homomorphisms from a finitely presented group Γ into an “nice” algebraic group G\, up to a natural notion of equivalence. In this talk\, we explore these spaces by studying their points over finite fields Fq and examining how symmetries of the group Γ\, encoded by its outer automorphism group Out(Γ)\, act on them.\nWe introduce a natural stratification of the space and count the number of points in each stratum\, using these counts to gain insight into the asymptotic behavior (when q goes to ∞) of the action as the size of the field grows. In particular\, we consider the case where Γ = Zr and G = SL3(C). \nThe talk will be self-contained and aimed at a broad audience\, with the necessary background developed along the way.

DESCRIPTION:The UMaine Extension Food Safety Webinar Series is a monthly\, expert-led educational series focused on practical food safety\, regulatory compliance\, and product innovation across the food system. Sessions cover topics such as electronic record-keeping\, workforce training\, chemical safety\, food adulteration prevention\, seafood pathogen detection\, audit readiness\, product development\, environmental air quality\, and alternative protein innovations. The series is designed for food producers\, processors\, seafood businesses\, entrepreneurs\, quality assurance staff\, extension educators\, students\, faculty\, regulatory professionals\, and technical specialists\, with particular relevance for those working with food safety training\, compliance systems\, seafood hazards\, product development\, and emerging technologies in food processing. \nFood businesses and professionals face increasing regulatory expectations\, evolving hazards\, and rapid technological change. By addressing real-world topics such as digital compliance systems\, chemical handling\, adulteration prevention\, seafood pathogen detection\, and audit preparation\, the series helps participants stay current and make informed\, practical decisions. Participants will gain practical tools\, real-world case studies\, and actionable strategies related to training programs\, compliance documentation\, safe chemical use\, adulteration prevention\, seafood safety\, product innovation\, and environmental controls—knowledge they can immediately apply in their operations\, classrooms\, or regulatory work. \nElectronic and In-Person Food Safety Training \nEffective training is a cornerstone of a strong food safety culture. SUMMARY:Colloquium - Bio-Inspired Surface Engineering: From New Anti-Infection  Strategies to Low-Cost Water Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Over millions of years\, Nature has developed a variety of highly effective\, sustainable solutions to a\nwide range of problems. Relatively recent advances in materials science are now making it possible\nfor scientists and engineers to adapt similar strategies for human problems. In this seminar\, I will\npresent our recent work on two such efforts: (1) exploring new ways of creating infection-resistant\nmaterials for healthcare that remove the need for antibiotics and (2) leveraging industrial\nmass-manufacturing capacity to create large-scale surfaces with functionality such as sensing. In\nour work on infection-resistant materials\, we draw from the way that Nature uses liquid-like layers\nas one effective method to control microorganisms. We created a similar system for commercially\navailable urinary catheters\, one of the most widely used and infection-prone medical devices. Tests\nof the modified catheter materials both in vitro and in vivo demonstrated that the presence of a\nliquid-like surface effectively prevented the attachment and spread of six of the most common\npathogens in catheter-associated urinary tract infection. The materials also resisted colonization by\nan emerging fungal pathogen of concern\, Candidozyma auris. In our work on functional surfaces\, we\nrepurpose a butterfly-scale-inspired nanoscale surface textured produced at 4\,000m\n2/h for the fashion industry as a water-quality sensor. By continuously monitoring the diffraction pattern\nproduced by the surface texture as water passes over it\, we show that it is possible to detect and\nquantify a variety of model contaminants including chemical compounds\, sediment\, and algae.\nPreliminary field testing in estuaries\, rivers\, and lakes around Maine confirmed the potential of\nbio-inspired diffraction sensing for low-cost environmental monitoring. Together\, these projects\nprovide a glimpse of the range of solutions that can be generated by looking to Nature for inspiration.

The Department of Art offers foundational studies in 2D Design\, 3D Design\, and Drawing\, as well as media-specific classes in Painting\, Ceramics\, Photography\, Printmaking\, Digital Art\, Graphic Design\, Drawing\, and Sculpture. SUMMARY:Talk – Bright ideas for a Stormy Future: Strengthening Southern Maine’s resilience to power outages
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be held virtually via Zoom and in-person at 107 Norman Smith Hall\, UMaine\, Orono. \n\nVirtual attendance: Complete the registration form for Zoom connection information\n\nSpeakers: Karina Graeter and James Rather\, Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission \nPower outages from inclement weather are a significant hazard in Maine\, where outages are among the most frequent in the country\, and are likely to become more frequent in Maine’s changing climate. While upgrading the electrical grid infrastructure is the responsibility of the electric utilities\, there are many actions that Maine’s regions\, state and local government(s)\, and community-based organizations can take to build upon and coordinate with utilities’ efforts to increase resilience. Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC)\, York and southern Oxford County’s Council of Governments\, recently completed a plan that includes an array of interventions designed to increase resilience to power outages in southern Maine. Join this session to learn about how power outages are affecting southern Maine communities and the actions the region will take to improve energy resilience in the face of a stormier future. \nKarina Graeter serves as the Sustainability Division Director for Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC)\, leading efforts to assist communities in local and regional response to climate change. Prior to joining SMPDC\, Karina served as the Sustainability Coordinator for the University of Maine. \nJames Rather serves as SMPDC’s Director of Strategic Initiatives\, overseeing many projects in economic development and long-range planning. James comes to SMPDC from the planning departments at the City of Portland\, City of New York\, and several firms within the private and nonprofit sectors.

SUMMARY:AI\, data science\, and medical care - Perspectives from the National Eye Institute

This talk highlights efforts at the National Eye Institute to address these changes and shares lessons for the broader scientific and medical communities. Topics include an overview of NEI\, the potential of imaging and AI to improve care (with pediatric retinal disease as an example)\, key challenges to adoption and NIH initiatives to address them\, and emerging trends shaping the future of clinical care\, research\, and education. \n\nAbout the speaker\nDr. Michael F. Chiang is Director of the National Eye Institute. By background\, he is a pediatric ophthalmologist and is also board-certified in clinical informatics. His research focuses on the interface of biomedical informatics and clinical ophthalmology in areas such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)\, telehealth\, artificial intelligence\, electronic health records\, data science\, and genotype-phenotype correlation. He is an Adjunct Investigator at the National Library of Medicine\, and his group has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and developed an assistive artificial intelligence system for ROP that received Breakthrough Status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.\n\nAbout the workshop\nThis distinguished lecture is presented by the University of Maine’s Office of the Vice President for Research and Maine College of Engineering and Computing. The University of Maine System is an equal opportunity institution committed to nondiscrimination.

SUMMARY:Oxford County Winter School Series: Identifying and Managing Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Maine Cooperative Extension for Oxford County Winter School for Farmers\, Homesteaders\, and Gardeners\, a seasonal learning series designed to support small farms\, homesteads\, and home gardeners across Oxford County and beyond. \nEach two-hour session features an engaging presentation followed by Q&A and discussion. The series includes both Zoom and in-person sessions to provide flexible participation options. \nTerrestrial Invasive Plant ID\, Ecology & Spread; the Importance of Early Detection & Rapid Response; and iMapInvasives will introduce people to the common invasive plants in Oxford County; how to identify them and how to remove them. SUMMARY:Tractor Safety Certification Course - Gorham
DESCRIPTION:This 5-week course starts on April 7th at Cherry Hill Shaw Farm in Gorham\, ME. \nParticipants will learn how to handle tractors and equipment safely\, how to identify hazards\, and how to minimize the chances of accidents. The course is open to all adults and youth interested. A Federal Certificate of Training will be issued at the end of the course after successful completion of the written test and driving course and with attendance requirements met. Developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to address farm losses and food insecurity in rural Waldo County\, Maine\, where nearly 6\,000 residents face food insecurity\, the program connects local gardeners\, farmers\, and neighbors to expand access to healthy\, local food. \nSpeakers: Viña Lindley\, UMaine Extension Horticulture Professional and Mattie John Bamman\, Waldo County Bounty Communications Coordinator \nRegister Online: Produce Sharing Tables \nCan’t attend live? Register anyway to receive access to the recording and a list of related resources. \nAbout the Speakers\nViña Lindley is a horticulture professional with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and implements programs that address issues in food access and sustainable approaches to horticulture. Viña’s focus is on empowering individuals\, families\, and institutions to enhance their understanding of sustainable practices grounded in research-based information. Viña coordinates the Master Gardener volunteers in Knox\, Lincoln and Waldo Counties and helps support their efforts to expand food access\, deepen knowledge\, and support a healthy environment in the community. Viña was involved with launching Waldo County Bounty and the “Give and Take” program. She lives in Lincolnville where she enjoys growing food with her family and sharing the bounty with her community. \nMattie John Bamman (he/him) serves as the communications coordinator for Waldo County Bounty\, a nonprofit organization that he cofounded during the pandemic to increase access to locally grown fruits and vegetables. Mattie has participated in the development of WCB programming\, including the Farm-to-Pantry\, Seedling-to-Pantry\, Veggies For All Gleaning\, and Give & Take Stand programs\, which seek to support food insecure individuals and farms to strengthen the Waldo County food system. He is also a homesteader who grew up as part of the Downeast back-to-the-land movement\, and has 20+ years of international food writing experience.
