SUMMARY:Earth\, Moon\, and Sun
DESCRIPTION:Earth\, Moon\, & Sun is a fast-paced full dome demonstration of lunar phases\, eclipses\, day and night\, the sun and other puzzling events with the help of a confused coyote. This program beautifully illustrates basic concepts like moon phases and seasons. Based on the trickster of Native American lore\, Coyote is constantly corrected in his misunderstandings of how things work. A live tour of the Maine sky and its beautiful constellations completes this micro-unit of astronomy. \nWatch the trailer here! \n  \n\n  \nTickets for planetarium programs are $7 for Adults\, $6 for UMaine Students/Veterans/Senior Citizens\, and $5 for children under 12. Click here to view our calendar. \nTickets may be purchased online\, by phone at 207.581.1341\, or at our ticket box office prior to the show.

SUMMARY:A Sneak Peak at the Maine Bird Atlas
DESCRIPTION:The Maine Bird Atlas was a five-year effort (2018-2022) to document the abundance and distribution of all of Maine’s breeding and wintering birds. By both scale and volume of data collected\, it is most certainly the largest wildlife resource survey ever conducted in the state\, creating an unparalleled data set and true vital signs check for Maine’s birds. By repeating and expanding on Maine’s first breeding bird atlas\, conducted from 1978-1983\, this project made it possible to assess how some of Maine’s bird communities have changed over time\, while also creating a new baseline for future comparisons. This collective effort\, powered by thousands of individuals\, will help guide research\, management\, and conservation actions for generations to come. This work marks not an end\, but a beginning. Join us for a sneak peek at key results while we wait for the book to hit the presses. \nAdrienne Leppold\, Ph.D.\, served as the Project Director for the Maine Bird Atlas\, founding and launching the project and helping guide it to completion alongside her collaborators. This work was largely carried out in addition to her role as the state’s landbird specialist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife from 2016 through 2024. In that position\, she coordinated research and conservation efforts for many priority species\, including Rusty Blackbird and Bicknell’s Thrush\, and\, utilizing Bird Atlas data\, led the effort for the addition of five songbird species to Maine’s Endangered and Threatened Species list in 2023. She is now working to build an online education platform focused on bird conservation\, titled When There Were Birds.

SUMMARY:The Natural Dye Garden: Plants\, Color\, and Process (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the practical and creative world of dye gardening. This presentation covers the key plants for a dye garden and their growing requirements\, how to build a surprisingly wide color palette from your own backyard\, and the natural dyeing process — with a touch of historical context and a look at some of the creative possibilities these plants offer. \nEileen Flanagan is a fiber farmer\, fiber artist\, and natural dye grower based in Vassalboro\, Maine\, where she and her husband John have farmed 70 acres since 2018\, raising sheep\, chickens\, and ducks alongside vegetables and natural dye plants. She sells at local farmers markets\, offering vegetables\, seedlings\, dye stuffs\, and naturally dyed and upcycled goods. Her fiber art practice draws on the full arc of her farm work — from raising animals and growing dye plants to spinning\, dyeing\, and creating finished pieces. Before turning her full attention to the farm\, she enjoyed a 30-year career in community and economic development. Her work brings together a deep love of the land\, sustainable practice\, and the centuries-old art of growing and using natural dyes. \nThis will take place on April 28 at 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. virtually on zoom(you will receive the zoom link in a follow up email after you register). \nRegister for The Natural Dye Garden here! \nFor more information or to request a reasonable accommodation\, contact Jennifer Cappello-Ruggiero at jennifer.cappelloruggiero@maine.edu or 207-324-2814. \n

SUMMARY:York County Farmers' Network Series: Staying Safe and Working Strong
DESCRIPTION:York County is home to a vibrant mix of farms—from small specialty growers to multi-generation family operations. \nThe York County Farmers Network (YCFN) was brought back to life to support this community\, foster connection\, and help local agriculture thrive well into the future. \nIn recent years\, York County farms have embraced agritourism and direct-to-consumer markets\, contributing to Maine’s $172 million in direct farm sales. But as farming evolves\, so do the challenges—like preparing for change in long term weather patterns\, navigating labor and finances\, and planning for the next generation. \nIn this workshop\, Maine AgrAbility will present and demonstrate assistive technologies and adaptive tools for use on small-scale farms and in gardens. Participants will learn about tools and ergonomic practices that increase productivity\, reduce pain\, and support mobility. Physical tools will be available for demonstration\, and participants are encouraged to ask questions. Information about the Maine AgrAbility program will also be shared. \nRegister for York County Farmers’ Network Series: Staying Safe and Working Strong here!
