Visit our Harold Alfond Center Workforce Development Funding page for more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram description\n\n\n\n\nHave you ever felt like you were more of a problem-solver than a teacher? Your best-made lesson plans are delayed by listening to your students argue about a problem that occurred at recess. You deal with this stress by addressing the class in a way that you regret. You know you’re a great teacher but you’re overwhelmed. \nIf this sounds familiar\, Teaching from the Heart is the professional development course for you. Our doubts as caregivers and teachers are inevitable. If we have a system to refer to when these doubts creep in\, we can relax. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn how to manage your classroom/learning environment with a practical\, simple curriculum based on Nonviolent Communication expert Gina Simm’s book Heart to Heart: Three Systems for Staying Connected (A Manual for Parents and Teachers). SUMMARY:Combating Antimicrobial Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Scott S Walker\, PhD\, Sr. Principal Scientist Merck & Co.\, Inc. Rahway\, NJ\, USA \nAbout the speaker: Scott earned a B.S. in Microbiology from The University of Maine and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Connecticut Health Center. His graduate work focused on understanding the basic architecture of a eukaryotic nuclear origin of DNA replication. Following postdoctoral work on activated transcription in eukaryotes at The University of Massachusetts Medical Center\, Scott joined Schering-Plough\, Inc. in the antibacterial and antifungal drug discovery group where he continues in the Infectious Disease and Vaccine division of Merck & Co.\, Inc. (Rahway\, NJ USA). Throughout a 25+-year pharmaceutical career as a basic scientist and team leader\, his work has focused on antibacterial and antifungal compound discovery\, target identification/validation\, and lead prioritization and optimization. Scott is also an ardent educator having mentored many interns and HBCU students and lectured at several universities. \nAbout the seminar:  Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a real and growing threat to human and animal health worldwide that jeopardizes many of the advances in medicine made over the past 75+ years. Combatting AMR requires exploiting novel targets in bacteria with new compounds that are not subject to resistance commonly encountered in the healthcare setting. This presentation will introduce two essential pathways found in drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria and describe the discovery\, characterization\, and optimization of novel antibacterial small molecule and peptide inhibitors of these critical processes. \nThe event is free to attend and will be held in Stodder Hall\, Room 57\, on the UMaine Orono campus.

SUMMARY:Flatland Cavalry
DESCRIPTION:Flatland Cavalry is breaking out into a gallop. After years of hot trotting across their native Texas\, the country outfit is primed for a breakout with the release of their third full-length album\, the sonically sprawling and wistfully written Welcome to Countryland. \nThe Texas sextet––bandleader and chief lyricist Cleto Cordero\, guitarist Reid Dillon\, bassist Jonathan Saenz\, drummer Jason Albers\, fiddle player Wesley Hall\, and utility instrumentalist Adam Gallegos––continue to embrace their trademark sound while further pushing into the wild unknown. When it was time to embark on recording a new album\, resting on their laurels was simply out of the realm of possibilities. \nFollowing the release of 2019’s critically-acclaimed Homeland Insecurity and their 2016 full-length debut Humble Folks\, they’ve been on a healthy trajectory rising through the country ranks. After years of working with Lubbock stalwart Scott Faris in the friendly confines of Amusement Park Studios\, Flatland decided a change of scenery was necessary. Despite some hesitation and a mix of emotions\, they instantly knew recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio A with rising producer Jake Gear was the right move. \nSince its release\, Welcome To Countryland has garnered critical praise from Rolling Stone\, Wall Street Journal\, Holler\, Whiskey Riff\, BrooklynVegan and many other outlets. The band concluded their hugely successful Welcome To Countryland Tour by selling out Billy Bob’s Texas in December 2021\, and kicked off 2022 with the release of the Far Out West Sessions. These stripped-down\, one-take acoustic performance videos of their 2021 hits recorded on-site in the vast deserts and mountain ranges of Far West Texas were an instant hit with fans\, so the band released the tapes on streaming platforms and embarked on the Far Out West Tour. \nWith tour dates from Seattle to London\, festival debuts from C2C to Stagecoach\, and coveted support slots with Luke Combs\, Eric Church and more\, the Far Out West Tour brought Flatland Cavalry to new corners of the globe. As 2022 neared its end they surprise-released the highly anticipated single “Mountain Song” and announced an EP to arrive in the Fall. \nWith more new music on the horizon\, 17 upcoming stadium shows with Luke Combs\, and a stacked touring calendar for 2024\, Flatland Cavalry is approaching global influence in the Country & Folk music world.

SUMMARY:Talk - Education as a Rural\, Public Good: Preparing Maine’s People\, Families\, Schools\, & Communities for the Opportunities of Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be held virtually via Zoom and in-person at 107 Norman Smith Hall\, UMaine\, Orono. \n\nVirtual attendance: Complete the registration form for Zoom connection information by clicking here.\n\nSpeakers: \n\nCat Biddle\, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership\, Director of the Center for Applied Research on Education and Schools\, University of Maine\nZeke Kimball\, Professor and Interim Dean\, University of Maine College of Education and Human Development\n\nLooking toward the future\, Maine faces many wicked problems that will require innovative\, human-centered solutions. Without such a response\, climate change\, an aging workforce\, housing shortages\, widening geographic opportunity divides\, growing economic inequality\, and other pressing challenges threaten the state’s long-term economic prosperity. Education informed by and linked to rural community development will be an essential strategy for creating the adaptive\, transformative change required to turn the challenges of the future into the opportunities of tomorrow. In this talk\, Cat Biddle and Zeke Kimball will explore the relationship between Maine’s schools\, rural communities\, and future. \nCatharine “Cat” Biddle is an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and the Director the Center for Applied Research on Education and Schools at the University of Maine. Her research focuses on ways in which rural schools and communities respond to social and economic change in the 21st century. She is particularly interested in how schools can more effectively leverage partnerships with external organizations or groups to address issues of social inequality and how non-traditional leaders—such as youth\, parents and other community members—may lead or serve as partners in these efforts. \nEzekiel “Zeke” Kimball is Professor and Interim Dean of the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development. His research focuses on how to create the conditions for student success in PK-20 education systems. He is a leading expert on disability identity development\, postsecondary STEM learning environments\, and how academia leverages scholarly knowledge for social impact. He is deeply committed to the role that education and a focus on human development can play in strengthening Maine’s communities.
