SUMMARY:Mathematics Colloquium — Vector vs. Scalar Sup Norms
DESCRIPTION:MAT Colloquium\nWednesday\, April 15\, 2026\nHill Auditorium\, Barrows Hall\nRefreshments at 3:00pm\, Talk 3:15-4:05pm \nSpeaker: Jack Buttcane\, University of Maine \nAbstract: \nRotations in three dimensions depend on three angles\, which we call the Euler angles. A function of the Euler angles can be expressed in terms of Wigner-D matrices\, which are representations of the rotation group SO(3). These matrix functions are strongly tied to quantum mechanics where they measure the probability of a state transition under a rotation\, but as a number theorist\, I am interested in their connection to automorphic forms: Suppose we have a vector-valued function of the 3×3 invertible matrices that transforms by a Wigner-D matrix under rotations. Then an interesting quantity to study is the “sup norm” sup_A ||f(A)||\, i.e. the maximum value of the length of the vector f(A) over 3×3 invertible matrices A. \nWe can also think of the function f as a vector of scalar-valued functions f=(f_{-d}\,…f_d) and for each entry f_j in the vector\, we can consider sup_A |f_j(A)|. The question I want to consider is\, to what extent does the ratio of these two sup norms depend exclusively on the Wigner-D matrix\, independent of the particular function f? As an undergraduate summer research project Andrii Obertas did some computations on this project and I’ll report on the outcome of those\, as well.

SUMMARY:Integrated Pest Management Spring Update for Christmas Tree Producers in Maine Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Session Topics\nBalsam Gall Midge Update\nPresenter: Brett Johnson\, Assistant Extension Professor\, Sustainable Agriculture and Farm Business Management Educator\, University of Maine Cooperative Extension \nBalsam gall midge is a major pest affecting balsam and Fraser fir Christmas trees in New England. It reduces quality in both trees and wreath brush by causing gall formation on current-year needles and premature needle drop. \nThis session will cover: \n\nResults from a 2024 insecticide efficacy trial in Southern Maine\nScouting methods and timing for insecticide applications\nAn integrated pest management approach to reduce economic losses\nStrategies to conserve beneficial biological control agents\n\nWeed IPM: Non-chemical and Chemical Control Strategies for Perennial Weed Management in Christmas Tree Production\nPresenter: Dr. Manjot Sidhu\, Assistant Extension Professor of Horticulture and Ornamental Horticulture Specialist\, University of Maine Cooperative Extension \nManaging perennial weeds in Christmas tree production requires a multi-faceted approach. Perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds compete for nutrients and can reduce tree health and quality. \nThis session will explore: \n\nBiology of common perennial weeds in Maine\nNon-chemical control methods such as mulching and clover groundcovers\nEffective chemical control strategies\nPreventing herbicide resistance\nProtecting trees during sensitive growth stages like bud break\nDeveloping a long-term\, climate-appropriate IPM plan\n\nThis session is eligible for 2 Maine Board of Pesticides Control recertification credits. \nRegistration is required to receive the Zoom link. Register for Integrated Pest Management Spring Update for Christmas Tree Producers in Maine Webinar here. \nIf the registration fee is a barrier\, contact: Billiejo Pendleton\, 207.342.5971 or billiejo.pendleton@maine.edu

Come to learn what is happening in Maine (literally in your backyards in Orono!)\, to bring back the American chestnut.
