SUMMARY:TIDES Talk: Essential Consideration for Math Intervention with Sarah R. Powell
DESCRIPTION:Many students experience difficulty with math and benefit from targeted math intervention. In the latest talk in the Project TIDES seminar series\, Sarah R. Powell from the University of Texas will focus on math trajectories for students and five research-validated practices that are essential for the design and delivery of math intervention. \nProject TIDES (Teaching and Inclusion for Disability Equity in STEM) is an innovative postdoctoral training program funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation providing early-career scholars with mentoring and professional development that centers the full inclusion of all persons in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and work. The talk will take place via Zoom. \nSarah R. Powell is a professor in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin and associate director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Her research\, teaching and service focus on mathematics\, particularly for students who experience mathematics differently. \nPowell is currently principal investigator (PI) of an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) efficacy grant (RAAMPS) related to word-problem solving at Grade 4. Powell is also PI of SPIRAL\, an IES grant which works collaboratively with Grade 4 and 5 teachers who provide mathematics instruction to students with mathematics difficulty. Powell is Co-PI of STAIR 2.0 (funded by IES) in which the team works with middle school special education math teachers and SCALE and SCALE-UP (funded by the U.S. Department of Education) in which the team is replicating a fraction intervention in Grades 4-8. Powell collaborates on Math Words\, an IES development grant about mathematics vocabulary. To help create the next generation of researchers focused on mathematics\, Powell is PI of a doctoral leadership grant (LIME) funded by the Office of Special Education Programs. Powell was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2019. \nPowell understands all of these efforts are a team effort\, and she thanks her project leads\, graduate students\, research assistants and research collaborators as well as the teachers and students who participate in these projects.

SUMMARY:Creating Solutions Together: Connecting Research to What Matters in Our Communities
DESCRIPTION:Given the challenges facing higher education today\, this is an important moment to reflect on lessons learned from UMaine research focused on the needs of diverse partners. These collaborations between faculty-student teams and communities have addressed a wide range of complex challenges\, including water resources\, forestry\, agriculture\, coastal fisheries\, climate change\, community and economic development\, renewable energy\, and solid waste management. Regardless of the issue\, we have learned that partners often seek help with problems shaped by interconnected environmental\, social\, and economic factors as they work to build stronger communities. Open communication\, mutual respect\, and trust are key ingredients for building successful partnerships. Finding solutions to complex problems also requires a long-term commitment and a willingness to learn-by-doing. One of our most important investments has been in training the next generation of leaders\, innovators\, and engaged citizens. Many former students now serve in important roles in local and state government\, Tribal Nations\, nonprofit organizations\, and the private sector. Join David Hart as he highlights key challenges and opportunities involved in ‘creating solutions together’ and proposes strategies for enhancing the value of university – community partnerships.

SUMMARY:Design of functional hybrid semiconductors and their synthesis by solution state self-assembly
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture Series 2026\nDepartment of Chemistry & FIRST joint seminar\nJoin us as we welcome Robert M. Stolz\, Post-doctoral Scholar (Stanford University) \nSemiconductive materials that can form from solution by self-assembly offer unique benefits. Among the most compelling is the ability to rationally obtain new functional properties that are intrinsic to the material. Hybrid semiconductors contain both organic and inorganic components\, allowing them to access a wide range of tunable properties. I will share two examples of hybrid semiconductors that advance the design and synthesis of semiconductors from solution. In the first example I will present my work on porous semiconductive frameworks for gas phase and solution phase chemical sensing applications. I will show how surface chemistry and host-guest interactions inform the sensing mechanism and how selective chemical sensing can be achieved by controlling morphology and composition. In the second example I will share the development of new metal-halide heterostructures that can be grown as large single crystals from solution. These heterostructures can be synthesized with tunable dimensionality that modifies their optoelectronic properties. Together these projects will showcase how organic and inorganic chemical principles can combine to obtain material systems that provide fundamental insight into structure-property relationships and compelling functional properties. \nRobert began his chemical journey at Wesleyan University (CT) earning a BA and MA working with Brian Northrop developing click chemistry for the synthesis of dendritic polymers. After a brief stint in industry at Dupont and Dow Chemical companies\, he moved to Hanover to study materials chemistry at Dartmouth College (NH) with Katherine A. Mirica\, earning his PhD in 2021. His thesis focused on understanding how the surface chemistry of conductive framework materials enables them to act as transducers for gas phase and solution phase chemical sensing. After his PhD\, Robert moved to Stanford University (CA) in 2022 where he is currently a PRISM Baker Postdoctoral Fellow. His current research in halide perovskites uses small-molecule chemistry and solution-state techniques to synthesize new solid-state materials.
