SUMMARY:All Things Equal: The Life & Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
DESCRIPTION:Supreme Court Justice “RBG” welcomes a friend of the family to her cozy chambers to convey\, over the course of ninety fascinating and often funny minutes\, a sense of her life and its many trials: losing her mother the day before she graduated as valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school … being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer … fighting for women’s rights in the nineteen-seventies before condescending all-male courts … and taking courageous stands for human rights as a voice of reason amid a splintering and increasingly politicized Supreme Court. An evening with a great and compassionate icon of straight-thinking American justice emerges … an RBG who is not only “notorious” but victorious as she takes a stand for ordinary people facing the many challenges of a changing world. Bring your scrunchies\, your hankies\, your humor and your heart to this entertaining and uplifting event! \nWritten by Tony Award-Winning playwright RUPERT HOLMES\nStarring Michelle Azar as Ruth Bader Ginsburg\nDirected by Laley Lippard \n$37-$52\, Students at UMaine and UMaine Machias are eligible to receive one free ticket for this show. Faculty & Staff can receive 20% off their ticket price. Tickets are non-transferable.

SUMMARY:TIDES Talk: Essential Consideration for Math Intervention with Sarah R. Powell
DESCRIPTION:Many students experience difficulty with math and benefit from targeted math intervention. In the latest talk in the Project TIDES seminar series\, Sarah R. Powell from the University of Texas will focus on math trajectories for students and five research-validated practices that are essential for the design and delivery of math intervention. \nProject TIDES (Teaching and Inclusion for Disability Equity in STEM) is an innovative postdoctoral training program funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation providing early-career scholars with mentoring and professional development that centers the full inclusion of all persons in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and work. The talk will take place via Zoom. \nSarah R. Powell is a professor in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin and associate director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Her research\, teaching and service focus on mathematics\, particularly for students who experience mathematics differently. \nPowell is currently principal investigator (PI) of an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) efficacy grant (RAAMPS) related to word-problem solving at Grade 4. Powell is also PI of SPIRAL\, an IES grant which works collaboratively with Grade 4 and 5 teachers who provide mathematics instruction to students with mathematics difficulty. Powell is Co-PI of STAIR 2.0 (funded by IES) in which the team works with middle school special education math teachers and SCALE and SCALE-UP (funded by the U.S. Department of Education) in which the team is replicating a fraction intervention in Grades 4-8. Powell collaborates on Math Words\, an IES development grant about mathematics vocabulary. To help create the next generation of researchers focused on mathematics\, Powell is PI of a doctoral leadership grant (LIME) funded by the Office of Special Education Programs. Powell was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2019. \nPowell understands all of these efforts are a team effort\, and she thanks her project leads\, graduate students\, research assistants and research collaborators as well as the teachers and students who participate in these projects.

SUMMARY:History Department Symposium Series: Creole at Sea: Race and Belonging in the Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The History Department Symposium Series presents “Creole at Sea: Race and Belonging in the Age of Revolution.” The talk will be delivered by Nathan Elliott Marvin\, associate professor of history\, University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The talk is scheduled for September 28 at 3:00 PM. \nBorn in French-Colonial Mauritius at the end of the 18th Century\, Jean-Baptiste Tabardin spent much of his youth at sea in a world transformed by the French Revolutionary Wars. Sailing first with French privateers and later\, after capture\, under British command\, he traveled from madagascar to China and across the Atlantic world\, passing through Bombay\, Canton\, London\, Halifax\, Bermuda\, and Guadeloupe. \nHis unpublished memoir\, written between 1805 and about 1814\, offers remarkably candid reflections on sex\, religion\, honor\, and racial inequality in the age of revolutions. Classified as a “free man of color\,” Tabardin instead identified as “Creole\,” a term he understood as meaningful far beyond the island of his birth. Following Tabardin across oceans\, this talk asks what it meant to call oneself “Creole” far from home. \nThis event is free and open to the public. The presentation will also be available on Zoom; you can find that link here. For more information\, contact assistant professor of history Sam Backer.

SUMMARY:SAT Prep Matters
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Smyth’s SAT Boot Camp has been used successfully to prepare students to take the SAT for many years. Students practice taking short sections of the test\, and are relaxed and well-rested\, so they are able to absorb the lessons and practice at their best. Using lessons that she writes herself\, Smyth has helped many students through their own hard work improve their SAT scores by 100-200 points.

SUMMARY:Direct\, Selective Grafting of a Controlled Polymerization from the N-Terminal ⍺- Carbon of Peptides
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture Series 2026Department of Chemistry\nJoin us as we welcome Ms. Megan Driscoll\, Ph.D. Candidate (Cornell University) \nGrafting well-defined polymers directly from the N-terminus would be a simple\, selective\, and broadly applicable method of synthesizing peptide-polymer conjugates. We have developed a method to graft controlled polymerization directly from the redox-activated N-terminus of amino acids and peptides. This method utilizes a biocompatible and selective isoquinolinium salt redox activation\, a commercially available chain transfer agent (CTA) precursor\, a non-toxic Eosin Y photocatalyst\, and low energy\, biocompatible visible light to initiate a well-controlled PET-RAFT polymerization directly from the N-terminal a-carbon. \nMegan Driscoll is a doctoral student in chemistry and chemical biology with a focus in polymer chemistry from Chelmsford\, Massachusetts. She earned her bachelor’s degree in marine science from the University of Maine and now researches new ways to make and upcycle polymers under the guidance of Brett Fors at Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Things We Remember By: Images\, Objects\, Landscapes\, and the Work of Memory
DESCRIPTION:How do images\, objects\, and landscapes help us remember – and what might they retain or remember in their own right? How do material remains shape our understanding of people\, places\, and past experiences\, even as they carry traces and transformations that exceed what is recalled or recorded? Join us as we consider the many ways memory is retained\, created\, transformed\, and contested through the material world. Panelists will utilize images drawn from their archaeological works\, museum objects\, landscape studies\, and other experiences as starting points for brief reflections on memory—whether personal\, social\, cultural\, political\, environmental\, or material. Together\, these contributions will explore how objects and images can carry\, evoke\, sustain\, or complicate relationships with the past. \nPanel Participants:\nDr. Christopher Witmore\, Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures\, Texas Tech University \nDr. Natalia Magnani\, Department of Anthropology and Climate Change Institute\, University of Maine \nDr. Joshua Walton\, Department of History and Honors College\, University of Maine \nDr. Gregory Zaro\, McGillicuddy Humanities Center & Department of Anthropology and Climate Change Institute\, University of Maine \nThis event is part of the 2026-2027 McGillicuddy Humanities Center Symposium: MEMORY.
