SUMMARY:2026 Student Exhibition in Lord Hall Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Lord Hall Gallery is proud to host the Department of Art’s 2026 Student Exhibition. This show celebrates the diverse artwork made by students at the University of Maine who have taken undergraduate courses in the Department of Art. The Department of Art offers foundational studies in 2D Design\, 3D Design\, and Drawing\, as well as media-specific classes in Painting\, Ceramics\, Photography\, Printmaking\, Digital Art\, Graphic Design\, Drawing\, and Sculpture. More information about the Department is available here:umaine.edu/las/art. \nStudents who were enrolled in an Art class in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 had the opportunity to submit up to six pieces for consideration in this juried exhibition. This year’s juror is Rochelle Lawrence. Lawrence is an artist and serves as the Assistant Curator and Education Coordinator at the Zillman Art Museum. \nThe exhibition runs from April 6th through May 1st. A public reception will be held on Friday April 10th from 5:00-7:00pm. During the reception\, selected students will be honored with awards. SUMMARY:Starting Seeds Indoors Workshop at Millinocket Memorial Library
DESCRIPTION:University of Maine Cooperative Extension is hosting a family-oriented Starting Seeds Indoors workshop on Wednesday\, April 8 from 2:30–3:30 p.m. at Millinocket Memorial Library\, 5 Maine Avenue. \nGardeners of all ages are invited to this hands-on workshop where Kate Garland\, Horticulturist with the UMaine Extension\, will provide a 30-minute overview of best practices for successful seed starting\, including timing\, lighting\, soil selection and care. The program will conclude with a make-and-take activity\, and participants will leave with newly sown seeds to grow at home and transplant into their own gardens. \nAt the same time\, Extension 4‑H Community Education Assistant Emily Bishop will lead youth in engaging\, seed‑themed activities. The session will include a lively read‑aloud connected to seed starting\, followed by a hands‑on activity where each child plants a seed to take home. \nThe workshop is free and open to the public. In this talk\, we will discuss a variety of such inequalities\, including new ones for convex hypersurfaces. The focus will be on results that can be stated without making reference to how quickly a space curves. This is joint work with Joseph Hoisington.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe annual Libby Lecture in Natural Resource Policy is scheduled to take place on April 9 at 3 PM in the McIntire Room of the Buchanan Alumni House. \nThis eighth installment of the lecture series will feature Dr. Aaron Rice\, principal ecologist at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at Cornell University. His presentation is titled Conservation Bioacoustics in a Rapidly Changing Ocean. \nDr. Rice will discuss ways in which his lab uses marine bioacoustics to understand and mitigate human impacts on whales and fishes from data-deficient species\, offshore wind farm construction\, and marine community responses to climate change\, addressing information gaps in marine spatial planning and providing data to reduce uncertainty with decision-making and policy development. \nThe annual Libby Lecture in Natural Resource Policy was established with a gift from Lawrence W. Libby ‘62 and Lois Murdock Libby ‘63. It is a collaborative event coordinated by the College of Earth\, Life\, and Health Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences\, with additional support this year from the Darling Marine Center.

The desperation within the family spirals\, leaving Tom to choose between the comfort of his family and his own happiness. \nThis important piece of the 20th century theatrical canon will be directed by Owen Hines and is almost entirely student-produced. Tickets are $15\, but admission is free with a student MaineCard. The show runs from April 3 through April 12; come see our talented students bring this great American play to vivid life in the Cyrus Pavilion Theater.

DESCRIPTION:Join Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District and UMaine Cooperative Extension for an in-person pruning workshop that combines an indoor overview of best practices with outdoor\, hands-on instruction. Participants will learn practical pruning techniques for shrubs while working directly with experienced instructors in a small-group setting. \nDate: April 11\, 1-3 p.m. (inclement weather date April 12\, same time)\nLocation: Law Farm Nature Trails\, Lee Cemetery Road\, Dover-Foxcroft\nCost: $20/person \nRegistration deadline: April 9\, Register here! \nWhat to Expect:\nThe session will begin at the Law Farm Outdoor Classroom (approximately 45 minutes) with an overview of pruning principles\, tools\, and safety considerations. DESCRIPTION:York County is home to a vibrant mix of farms—from small specialty growers to multi-generation family operations. \nThe York County Farmers Network (YCFN) was brought back to life to support this community\, foster connection\, and help local agriculture thrive well into the future. \nIn recent years\, York County farms have embraced agritourism and direct-to-consumer markets\, contributing to Maine’s $172 million in direct farm sales. But as farming evolves\, so do the challenges—like preparing for change in long term weather patterns\, navigating labor and finances\, and planning for the next generation. \nIn this workshop\, Renae Moran will demonstrate pruning techniques and teach the principles of pruning fruit trees. The class will include a discussion of different strategies of pruning that can improve fruiting and manage tree size. DESCRIPTION:Lord Hall Gallery is proud to host the Department of Art’s 2026 Student Exhibition. This show celebrates the diverse artwork made by students at the University of Maine who have taken undergraduate courses in the Department of Art. The Department of Art offers foundational studies in 2D Design\, 3D Design\, and Drawing\, as well as media-specific classes in Painting\, Ceramics\, Photography\, Printmaking\, Digital Art\, Graphic Design\, Drawing\, and Sculpture.
