SUMMARY:Garden Fest & Fun Run at Rogers Farm
DESCRIPTION:University of Maine Cooperative Extension will host its annual Rogers Farm Demonstration Garden Fest and Fun Run on Saturday\, September 12\, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at 914 Bennoch Road in Old Town. The event is free and open to the public\, with a rain date of Sunday\, September 13. \nVisitors can explore more than 30 themed gardens and enjoy a variety of hands-on activities\, including tastings\, art in the garden and building and racing a veggie vehicle. The event also offers opportunities to learn about pollinator-friendly gardening\, eating seasonally\, soil testing and cover crops. \nA rainbow-themed fun run for youth ages 12 and younger will begin at 11 a.m. Children can arrive early to create a wand or banner to carry during the run and take home as a keepsake. \nThe Rogers Farm Demonstration Garden is a 2-acre teaching garden operated by University of Maine Cooperative Extension. DESCRIPTION:“Meditations on Perihelion” is an immersive experience featuring full-dome video\, music\, and live performance by Tom Luther. The work is presented in 7 movements that explore the different possibilities of connections between science and art.  It explores the world of science through the world of art by immersing the viewer in 3d visuals and sound. Inspired by astronomical data the images are intended as a starting point for the audience’s imagination. The focus of this iteration has been on the three background cycles (Milankovitch Cycles) that govern our planet’s orbital alignment and seasonal changes. \nTom Luther is a performer\, composer\, improviser and audio-visual artist. His work ranges from solo and small group acoustic music to computer based interactive video projects. He draws on his experience in Western European art music\, jazz\, and modern composition styles to create a unique hybrid language. He teaches piano\, composition\, and digital music at Midcoast Music Academy in Rockport\, Maine. DESCRIPTION:The University of Maine’s Hazing Prevention Research Lab (HPRL) and StopHazing will host an exclusive\, free screening of the documentary 4000 Days\, with filmmaker Daniel Catullo and executive producers Julie and Gary DeVercelly\, on Tuesday Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. in DP Corbett 100. \nThe film chronicles the public struggle of three families whose personal tragedies become part of a nationwide movement for change — and the center of a push for legislative reform around the dangers of hazing. After losing their sons to fraternity hazing\, the families begin a relentless public fight that resulted in the passage of the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act. \n4000 Days captures their journey — the title representing the number of days it took to turn grief into action\, then grief into law. From intimate personal moments to painful court appearances\, the film tells a story not just about loss\, but also one of resilience\, undying determination and the power of ordinary people to turn tragedy into lasting impact. \nUniversity of Maine Professor of Higher Education Elizabeth Allan\, a leading expert on hazing and hazing prevention in higher education\, and UMaine alumna Meredith Stewart will also be on hand for the screening. Allan is director and principal of the HPRL at UMaine\, as well as principal and founder of the research group StopHazing. Stewart is StopHazing’s director of strategy and operations. Both consulted with lawmakers and congressional staff during the crafting of the Stop Campus Hazing Act\, and appear throughout the film. \nJulie and Gary DeVercelly\, who lost their son Gary Jr. to hazing and who will be at the screening\, are longtime supporters of UMaine and Allan’s work. \nThe screening is being held during National Hazing Awareness Week (Sept. 21-25).
