SUMMARY:Mathematics Colloquium: Statistics in Number Theory
DESCRIPTION:Many basic objects in number theory\, such as prime numbers\, do not follow any regular patterns.  However\, they typically obey certain statistical laws – some of which are less obvious than others.  I will first discuss some aspects of the distribution of prime numbers\, explaining how they behave like random numbers in some ways but not others.  Then I will discuss the distribution of other key objects in number theory – elliptic curves and modular forms.\n\n\nSpeaker: Professor Kimball Martin\, Osaka Metropolitan University (Japan)\nRoom: Hill Auditorium (Barrows)\nTime: Snacks at 3pm\, Talk 3:15 – 4:05 pm.
