SUMMARY:Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence Intervention Training for Mental Health Professionals

Visit our Harold Alfond Center Workforce Development Funding page for more information. \nProgram Description\nThis two-day program\, presented in partnership with New Hope Midcoast\, is designed for social workers\, substance abuse counselors and other mental health professionals\, as well as clergy\, police officers and first responders to become certified in intimate partner violence training. \nThe following topics will be covered during the 12-contact hours of the program: foundations of domestic abuse\, addressing the lasting impact of domestic abuse\, intervention strategies of domestic abuse and trauma-informed and culturally competent responses to domestic abuse. \nProgram Benefits\nThis 12-hour curriculum was developed collaboratively by the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and partners in the mental health field in order to meet the 2020 domestic violence training requirements for psychologists\, licensed clinical social workers and licensed clinical professional counselors (see L.D. 1238. 126th Legis. 2013). The four three-hour modules include information that will help mental health professionals be prepared to work with people who have experienced and perpetrated domestic abuse and violence. \nTopics Covered\nDay 1\nModule 1 – Domestic Abuse: Foundations \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nDefine domestic abuse and trauma\nExamine the multitude of barriers to safety that batters create for their partners and family members\nIdentify the tactics that batterers employ to obtain and maintain power and control over their partners and family members\n\nModule 2 – Domestic Abuse: Addressing the Lasting Impact \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the impact of trauma on the brain\nIdentify several short and long-term health impacts of domestic violence\nDescribe particular challenges facing survivors of multi-abuse trauma\n\nDay 2\nModule 3 – Domestic Abuse: Intervention Strategies \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nDistinguish between appropriate roles for mental health providers and those for domestic violence advocates\nIdentify screening strategies to use in your practice\nDescribe the basic safety planning strategies\, including how to refer to a domestic violence resource center\nDefine the difference between risk analysis and evidence-based risk assessment\nAnalyze batterer tactics of control as they relate to seeking professional help\n\nModule 4 – Domestic Abuse: Trauma-Informed and Culturally Competent Responses \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss trauma-informed strategies for working with survivors\nList strategies for addressing secondary trauma that you may experience as a provide\nAnalyze the barriers and resources faith provides to both survivors and abusers\nDescribe various aspects of culturally competent services and list culturally-specific domestic violence resources in Maine\n\nWho Should Enroll\n\nPsychologists\nLicensed clinical social workers\nLicensed clinical professional counselors\n\nNot sure if this program is right for you? Contact us at um.continuinged@maine.edu and we can help you figure it out. \nProgram Details\nFacilitator\nPresenter Lori Rodriguez (she/her/they/them) is a domestic violence resource center advocate with New Hope Midcoast. Her background is in gender and sexuality studies\, as well as in campus-based sexual violence prevention. Their current role as a Community Prevention Educator focuses on working directly with people impacted by domestic abuse\, dating violence and stalking. In addition\, they provide educational resources to members of the Midcoast Maine community about the dynamics of domestic abuse. Lori has a particular passion for working with survivors in the LGBTQ+ community as well as working towards enhancing community members’ and other social service providers’ ability to respond from an anti-oppression\, trauma-informed lens. \nDates and Times\nDecember 3-4\, 2025\n8:30 am – 4:00 pm ET \nModality\nThis dynamic program will be offered synchronously via Zoom—you’ll need access to a stable internet connection. \nProgram Fee\n$235 \nParticipants can choose to participate in one or two days of the program. SUMMARY:Start Your 4-H Volunteer Journey
DESCRIPTION:“Start Your 4-H Volunteer Journey” will provide participants with information about the UMaine Extension 4-H program\, including key aspects of positive youth development and opportunities to help youth as a volunteer. The one-hour virtual sessions will also outline the application process for anyone interested in getting involved. \n4-H is a positive youth development program that empowers youth to “find their spark” and thrive. Volunteers play key roles in these experiences\, making a difference by helping youth explore and discover the skills they need to lead successful and fulfilling lives. SUMMARY:Conceptualizing STEM Education: From Discipline to (the) Learning Science(s)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many different stakeholders– ranging practicing scientists to educators to policymakers– have sought to conceptualize what STEM education means and how effective educational practices can support STEM learning. In this talk\, three common models for representing STEM education are presented and discussed. Disciplinary-based educational research draws on perspectives from within STEM disciplines and asks how effective educational strategies can support outcomes important to the field. The science of broadening participation seeks to ensure access to STEM learning for all students and that pathways to STEM careers are widely available. Finally\, the learning sciences have often drawn on insights from an array of diverse disciplines to demonstrate how effective instructional practices and evidence-based models of student learning can shape outcomes that matter across STEM fields (& beyond). \nPresenter Bio: Justin Dimmel is associate dean for academics and student engagement in the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development\, where he also serves as an associate professor of mathematics education and instructional technology in the School of Learning and Teaching. Dr. Dimmel has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher education. He is the founder and director of the Immersive Mathematics in Rendered Environments (IMRE) Lab\, which designs virtual and augmented reality math and science learning environments\, and investigates how VR and AR technologies can transform STEM education. In addition\, he led a team that developed the SunRule\, an interactive sculpture that harnesses the rays of the sun to help users explore multiplication and division. The project was chosen for UMaine’s MIRTA accelerator\, a program designed to advance research along the path to commercialization\, turning lab innovations into real-world products and services with public benefit. In 2022\, Dimmel received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award\, the organization’s most prestigious award for early career faculty.
